The "Goat", one of the three best coffee houses in town.
BTW - anyone here remember the " I & Thou " coffee house?
I had an apt. above it in the summer of 1967.
Win a donut if you can recall the name of this somewhat infamous neighborhood?
Oh. . .I thought you were being specific to Ohio. ...
That was the Summer of Love or Riots depending upon where you were.
Haight-Ashbury, Greatful Dead, escalating War in Vietnam, Weed, Acid, Hendrix at Monterey, and so it went and a lot more. . .. Woodstock was still two years in the future and Kent State just beyond that. Very lively times but I was too young to be independent and on my own. Universities were places of political unrest and the government was fearful of a revolution.

And don't forget that Forrest Gump saved Lt. Dan.
Yeah, the I & Thou was on Haight street. Go in for a cup of coffee, read the Digger News, play chess - for hours. Then traipse off to Fisherman's Warf to busk for a couple bucks from the tourists from Ohio. Like going to work. Sort of.
Good times, until the crazies moved in....then a lot of us moved back to SoCal.
Less than 2 yrs later was training as a combat medic in Texas.

you you wrote:Can't you North Americans just try tea ffs.
Like drinking hot water.
Still, a big glass of brewed Lipton iced tea can be a summer time drink.
Glad we didn't throw all of it in the harbor.

Worst thing you can do to a good cup of tea is to freeze it death. Most tea in America IS like drinking hot water, especially all the froo-froo, flavoured crap.
Best I have found over here is 'Tetley's British Blend' - most supermarkets carry it..
I was in the Air Force while all of that stuff was going on. 1963-1967 (x-ray tech)
Then I went into the Coast Guard. (Aircraft electrician, flight mechanic, radioman/navigator, dropmaster, quality control inspector, etc. ...over qualified on everything. )

Come into the dispensary at Ft. Sam Houston c/o back pain during basic training - we'd give a sheet full of nice exercises to do ea. day!
Yup. . .know what you mean.
Thing is for me if it was just some back pain I would have worked around it and completed my tour. . .maybe re-upped. But it was a complication from one of the surgeries that I had about a year before I enlisted that was giving me problems. Healing issues. . .needed to have the wound cauterized when it would open up from too much physical stress. It took a couple of years for the thing to totally heal and not act up anymore.
Just as a Heads Up, be prepared if you decide to visit San Francisco.
My wife and I went to San Francisco a few years back to visit one of our grown kids. While there we decided to stop in at one of the many little restaurants near Haight-Ashbury. When we got inside and seated we were surprised when several nude men walked in and took a seat at one of the tables. Well, they weren't completely nude. Both had sandals on and one had a hat on.
We had to wonder if they clean the chairs between customers.
After finishing our meal we casually walked out and looked around, having not really done so before eating because we had driven there. There were naked people here and there throughout the pedestrian traffic.

Speaking of Sam Houston it suddenly occurred to me that I visited his birth sight years ago while down in Virginia. And just down the road the site of the birth place of Dr. Ephraim McDowell who is referred to as the Father of Abdominal Surgery. Small world eh? That area bore some famous people. . .who would have thought?
