Top Box ...
I have always disliked the look of a top box on a bike or scooter. The way that they hang off the back of the machine behind the rear wheel has always looked totally wrong to me, even though they are indeed handy for carrying extra gear or storing your helmet while you duck into the shop for something.
I own two top boxes, but hardly ever use them for several reasons.
Recently, I discovered the solution to my extra storage space problems when I saw a Nelson Rigg seat bag. I immediately purchased one, recognizing the perfect design and solution that the bag represented.
This expandable well made product is the answer to my search for the perfect extra gear carrier that doesn't have the problems of the horrible top box that always look so like an afterthought that the owner tacked onto the rear of the bike in desperation for some more space.
The Nelson Rigg seat bag is easy to set up, requires no extra hardware to be installed and does not detract in any way from the look or feel of the bike.
It is very well made and designed, comes with a huge warranty against defect, and stores a lot of extra gear easily.
I'm loving my one.

Re: Top Box ...
I can't stand the look of my PCX without the Givi, seems like something is missing and it looks unbalanced. That Nelson Rigg seat looks good, but it seems to be awkwardly taking the pillion's seat. Maybe a case of different strokes for diff folks...
Everything looks better from the inside of a motorcycle helmet...

Re: Top Box ...
I can remove the seat bag easily by lifting the seat on the PCX. Then my wife can ride pillion to the cafe with me.
Mostly though, I ride alone, which means that the Rigg Bag sits happily behind me on the pillion seat.
No top box needed.

Re: Top Box ...
Thanks Rain! Slick looking Expandable Choice! Some tailbags have straps exiting from front and rear, this Nelson bag has straps out the sides making it easier to secure under saddle. I hope you can adjust them good and tight.

Re: Top Box ...
Agreed! It doesn't look great. But I use my top box to be seen. I have the givi with the LED brake light on it. Never felt the standard brake light was big enough or high enough to be seen. So I added the top box. Don't know why the lights look different in the photo. The top box light is as bright as the other if not more.
I do use my givi scooter bag like the the Nelson rigg bag. Strap it on and use it as a replacement hump. It covers part of where the hump was. Both the top box and bag go with me everywhere and both get used almost every day.

Re: Top Box ...
I wonder how many pizzas can go in that box before it affects handling. If they put that box onto the red one it would probably flip the bike front up while setting the tail onto the ground. Now THAT would be funny. :-)

Re: Top Box ...
Might be utility in your opinion but a milk crate is far from an elegant secure luggage solution.

Re: Top Box ...
It really is a nice looking bag. For those who do Not like the look of a top box this looks like a good alternative.
I am one of those who happens to love my top box. It not only allows me to store my helmet when I go shopping, but it holds quite a few groceries once I am done shopping. I always surprise passers by with the hiding places for all of the groceries.

Re: Top Box ...
I agree Mel, I don't mind the look at all. Plus the utility is great. But that bag would hold even more stuff in conjunction with the top box!

What is "secure" while ON the machine?gn2 wrote:Might be utility in your opinion but a milk crate is far from an elegant secure luggage solution.
A milk crate is a container. You put your stuff in it...and when it's parked, take it with you. The same you would with expenive, detachable luggage.
Here, I use a dry-bag, or a military duffle, or a plastic bag, or whatever. What I lose in chic, I gain in saving $200-plus.
Re: Top Box ...
Unlock and open top box put stuff in, lock with key.
Arrive at destination with contents of box guaranteed still in box and clean and dry.
Take stuff out of box or take whole box with you.
If you need the additional storage its definitely money well spent.

Re: Top Box ...
I used a milk crate on my bike once but at higher speeds it does something to aerodynamics of the bike. With or without something in it, it is square so the wind hits the corners and causes problems with steering since the backend wants to go its own way.
Top boxes are really not that expensive. It all depends on the size you want. It could be as low as $90 or as high as $400.
You might even be able to find used ones on ebay.
