Yam XMAX-anyone got one? Opinions?

Post by Jge64 »

Have a friend that bought a brand new Yamaha Xmax, and he's come down with some major medical problems. Wants me to sell it. I'm thinking about buying it myself and selling my PCX. Anybody got any opinions or experiences on this unit? It looks very, very nice.

The Yamaha XMax and the next Honda Forza were on my short list if I ever decided to downsize and sell my old KLR and Bandit and have a scoot that could do some distance (be freeway legal/capable) for a reasonable price. Although I have some issues with the location of the horn and turn signal switch on the newer Honda products I'd be willing to give the new Forza (when it hits U.S. showrooms) serious consideration if the seat was comfortable beyond any doubt and it wasn't a nightmare to do simple maintenance. From what I've seen so far on European videos it looks good!

That said they didn't have an XMax on the showroom floor when I bought my Zuma so I didn't have a chance to sit on one just to see what it was like. However the next time I'm at the dealership I will check one out just to get good information to compare models and make a more informed decision later on.

I'm happy with the build quality of my 2018 Zuma 125. It's a far cry from the XMax but the quality of workmanship is there. I bought it to be used within a 30 mile radius. So it's my go-to daily errand wagon with aspirations of light duty off-road jaunts on maintained forest roads. Being air cooled it's simpler to work on. . .. My experience with Yamaha motorcycles has always been good and they were reliable.

I did sit on the SMax and the seat was comfortable but you have to be able to fit into it so longer legged folks may have some issues. It's zippy from what I've heard.

My advice on what little I know about the XMax is take some serious time to check out the ergonomics to see if it is a fit for you. The turn signal and horn button are in the traditional location. Here's a couple of lengthly videos I watched a few times. These people do talk a lot about the machine so maybe you can get some helpful tips. 8)

Nothing to lose by buying the XMAX , how much is he going to list it for. With used you could ride it for a year and sell it for what 200 to 400 dollars less what you paid of it. You're not losing thousands selling a new ride.

i put 12 miles on it so far it has more power than ill ever use it seems to handle well i dident really notice the added weight i think its at least 100 pounds heavier than my pcx but im not sure. The battery is in a kinda weird place its in front of the handlebars i had to remove a piece from in front of the windshield to hook up my battery tender leads but so far i really like it

Yup, the xmax is 100lbs more than the pcx. Ill miss the light weight of the pcx but need more interstate capability.

Please continue to post your observations as you see them....thanks

The fugly styling.
Saying that, it looks better than the new Forza imo.

looks Really subjective. Spec-wise it is a winner.

Some other items to consider which don't appear on the spec sheet but are more important than a few mm, kg or hp ;)
Service interval?
Valve clearance adjustment interval?
Valve clearance adjustment method?
Belt change interval?

(the Yamaha is still winning)

I downloaded the owners manual, looks like after an additional 600 mile inspection (which does not req) the valves, the first time you do anything is 12,000 miles… I like it…

Ok, i'll be in the xmax this coming week. Sold my pcx to a neighbor....excited....Selling the CTX too.....it's just too big and bulky for me, the Xmax is right in the middle weight wise. (Pcx=300 lbs, ctx=500, xmax=400)

Saw the ADV posts. . ..

Have to say I agree about the Yamaha quality on my Zuma as well. Solid.

To think the company started with tuning forks.

Honda and Yamaha were already considering going into partnership producing electric motorcycles over a year ago. . .here's a link to the article. Maybe they'll call it a "Hondaha".

I think you'll be happy with the XMax. I was originally looking at the PCX, but got convinced to look at look at bigger scooters. The XMax has plenty of speed, easy to handle, and a lot of storage and features.
