New owner and new project

Post by tr4boy »

Hi, Folks,

I just picked up this 2013 with 8036 miles on it. Looks funny parked next to the Harley but they seem to be getting along so far. As you can tell from the dust and tumble weeds, it's been sitting for a bit. The previous owner tells me it's been two years since it was ridden but I'm guessing more like four. I took a chance on it at $500. I figure that I can always part it out for that if I need to but I don't think I'll have to.

It's not wanting to run at the moment. I get the gauge sweep, horns, turn signals, but no headlight, fuel pump or MIL. I take that back, the fuel pump and MIL will come on once in a while if subject the kill switch to some serious abuse so I ordered a new one. Anybody know if the switch pries out from the top of the housing or do I have to remove the housing to get to it?

Haven't done much with it yet other than sitting on it and making scooter noises. I did drain the gas tank and surprisingly the gas was still ok. Must not have any ethanol in it. Filled it with fresh gas and now just waiting for parts. Picking up the tires today, then on to doing a full service.

Wish me luck!

I am going to guess that the battery is also not holding an adequate charge. That would be expected. When you turn the bike on you should get gauges and the fuel pump sound.

On the 2013 model (I have two of them) the headlight will not come on until the bike starts. Change out the battery and then see if it starts. You can charge up the old battery and see if it will hold the charge, but I think it will not last much longer. Neither of mine lasted more than 2 years.

...and give the poor thing a bath! :-)

Well as I suspected, the kill switch was the culprit. Swapped in a new one and everything worked as expected. You do have to take the kill switch housing apart to get to the switch but it was a five minute job. I replaced the air cleaner, the rear brake shoes and front pads, put on new tires and was able to take it around the block...

Now to refer to the maintenance chart and start checking things off...
