Bird Gathering Seed Before the Storm

Post by Old Grinner »

Wet out today. Wet again tomorrow. Storm front coming through later on tomorrow night with rain, possibly heavy, and strong gusty winds. Power outages predicted as well. Good times!

This bird gathers nutrients in the calm before the disruption . . .. o_O

As do the squirrels.

We have a squirrel baffle to make sure the birds get their share. There are some big birds, such as a big Woodpecker we call "Woodrow " that throw the seeds out all over the ground, which takes care of all the little ground runners. Before we had the baffle the squirrels would empty the feeders.

I fill up the "Thistle" seed feeder (basically for Gold Finches) and let it run empty. It takes a while. The Gold Finches migrate out when the Autumn begins so the consumption rate drops dramatically. I can't leave the "Thistle" in the feeder for too long because over time moisture can effect it and it gets gunky looking . . . whitish mold appearance. So best to lower the refill rate during the cold months so the other small birds are fed and the seed stays fresh.

The other feeder has the usual mix of Sunflower and other seeds. I fill it up once in the morning and when it's gone it's gone. The local squirrel family has mastered the technique of jumping up on it and hanging upside down (clinging with their feet to the top) and shoveling out the seed as needed or eating in place. That said other birds like "Morning Doves" and "Blue Jays" gather what they can from spillage. I've had a skunk out there feeding too. But not hanging upside down . . ..
