Is it possible to edit one's posts?
I couldn't find a dedicated area for questions about forum software or help in general.
Sometimes I would like to make minor corrections (fix typos or find a better expression) after I have submitted my message. Is there a way to edit one's own posts?
EDIT: now I see the button. It seems to be there for only a very short time.

I have learned from my mistakes, and I am sure I can repeat them exactly.

Ten minutes.
It's deliberately set that way.
One way to avoid typos and such is to compose your message in a text editor application then when you have edited it and checked it to your satisfaction, it's just a simple matter of copy and paste.

I thought you just popped your posts out into the porcelain, or here? Whatevergn2 wrote:Ten minutes.

Is that other site still going? Just did a search and found zero posts there by you you and none by gn2 in the last year or so.

That's because they banned GN2...Taz wrote:Is that other site still going? Just did a search and found zero posts there by you you and none by gn2 in the last year or so.
I haven't officially stated in any FAQ why editing is disabled after the post is 10 minutes old. I have two reasons for it, feel free to question my methods or critique:
1. It encourages good posting quality. If you know you can't change what you say, you know you're accountable for the post, and can't take back what you've said. It's written in stone so to speak. The 10 minute edit window allows you to fix your grammar or spelling mistakes. Obviously, if a post goes big and becomes a how-to, or requires editing, you can PM me and I'll see what I can do.
2. It prevents bait-and-switch discussions. I don't have a better term for it, but here's my logic. Person A starts a flame war about JCosta variators, or some other trinket, or GN2. Person B replies angrily, and the flame war continues on like this. Later on, Person A decides to make it sound like they weren't instigating the flame war, and to create the illusion that Person B was just being an ass, so they go back and edit ALL their posts in the thread so they look like they were getting victimized. This (and the editing of other people's posts by the moderator) was a lot of why this forum was created, because this happened on the other forum. It got worse there too -- the mod and ensured people couldn't go back and change what they said by banning them. Yeah...
Anyways, I have no reason to change this, and will not unless someone provides a compelling argument for it. As always though, since this is a maddie-dogtatorship, I'm always open to suggestions about how I can do things better if you have any ideas!

Actually it's because although my membership there was reinstated I choose not to use the site.maddiedog wrote:That's because they banned GN2...

Re: Is it possible to edit one's posts?
Yeah, they unbanned everyone. I still haven't posted there though -- which is sad, considering almost 10% of the posts on the site are from me. When I left, I had over 18% of posts on that site.
I probably should find more hobbies.
