I mean how do you tell when you are putting too much in?

you buy a plastic oil measuring jug. failing that you put in a bit under the right amount and check the oil strictly according to the procedure as described in the manual:

1. let the engine run for 5 minutes until it is completely warmed up
2. turn it off and put it on the center stand
3. wait 2-3 minutes and check the oil

if it is a bit low, add a bit.

I think it will be fine. Hard to read dipstick though. Does anyone have any good methods of making the dipstick more legible? Even if just temporarily then removing whatever it is? Could I wrap masking tape on end, stick it in, read it and take off?

in my experience it is easy to read the dipstick when you follow the proper procedure on most bikes. i have never checked the oil on my PCX though.

I followed the procedure but the dipstick is gray and the oil is pretty much clear

Only thing that stunk was that the drain pan I used was round and the center stand was the the way so a pretty good amount of oil leaked down onto our carport concrete. I wish the drain was a little further away from the center stand

when the oil has settled after doing the proper oil check procedure, you should see a clear line on the dipstick. if it is clear you have to look closely but the level should be clear.

it is a known issue that it is a messy affair to change the oil on the PCX as you have experienced. luckily for my, my dealer only charges me $1.50 more than i could buy the oil at the cheapest place, so i just have them do it. they have a piece of plastic that helps guide the oil into the pan.

I would do it myself if it cost that much. they charge about $10 at the dealership. there are so many bike shops here and competition is fierce. since I bought the bike there, they don't charge anything for labor, just for the oil!

If it's a bit overfilled, your scooter will just be a bit slow. Ride it a few miles to get that oil dirty and check again.

When you check the dipstick:
1. Unscrew the dipstick and remove it.
2. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth.
3. Reinsert, but do not screw in.
4. Pull out and read.

It's fine to be on the high side, just not over the crosshatches.
