I can decrease the max photo size, or force thumbnails to be generated if the image is over a certain size. Would that be helpful? The current max size is 1920x1080.Taz wrote:In particular I'm noticing pics added are often way too wide so that reading threads with a pic in a page needs zooming in and out to compensate for small fonts on those pages.

Re: State of the forum - July 2013!
Disagree about thumbnails, unless links led to larger pics. I have been looking recently at tank bag installs here, and some of the pics are so small that you really can't figure out attachments or get a feel for what you are actually seeing. I can use the magnifier thing, but if you don't have the pixels to start with, 2x doesn't really help much. And the really nice scenic shots would be far less attractive in a smaller size.
I can certainly see the benefit of limiting file size (maybe 1 meg or so?) from a hosting and load speed point of view, but I don't think limiting actual pixel size is the way to go. 600 x 800 used to be the normal, but those of us on old-fashioned computers have probably gone wide screen. If you are on a phone sort of thing, pretty much everything is a thumbnail anyway.

That's how it would work.GeorgeSK wrote:Disagree about thumbnails, unless links led to larger pics.
Instead of loading up big images, you get small ones and if you want to see the bigger version, you click on the thumbnail.

Ok, this is about to get pic-heavy, but I think I've figured all out. '
To summarize -- all users can upload as many pictures as they want, and are encouraged to do so, as long as the pictures are relevant to the topic. Image size is restricted to a maximum of 1080p (1920x1080px). All images above 1024x768 will be "thumbnailed" and displayed as 1024x768. Users wanting to view a larger size can click the image to view it larger.
Some examples of image size:
640x480 displays the full image, and won't make a thumbnail: 800x600 displays the full image, and won't make a thumbnail: 1024x768 displays the full image, and won't make a thumbnail: 1600x900 is larger than 1024x768, so it'll get displayed as a thumbnail at 1024x768. Users can click the image to view full resolution. 1920x1080 is the largest allowable size, and is displayed as a thumbnail at 1024x768. Users can click the image to view full resolution.
Hope this is helpful!

Aw come on, old fart. My 12" laptop has a 1080p screen. Sounds like you need an upgrade.
I'll think about it. Anyone else prefer 800x600?

Re: State of the forum - July 2013!
Both the devices I use have a pixel width of 1280 one of them is only a few weeks old.
When I have a browser open I like to have a bookmarks sidebar open.
With the sidebar and the site's margins the 1024 size is still too wide.
As for your laptop, 1080p?
What's the actual resolution?

1920x1080. It's a Dell XPS12. Both my monitors at home are Samsung BX2440Xs, same resolution.

I think a thumbnail with 800 x 600 dimensions would be just fine, provided that you can still post big pics and click on them to make them full size.
I have learned from my mistakes, and I am sure I can repeat them exactly.
