How-To: Oil Change For Honda PCX

Thought I'd share what I use for my oil change. I change the engine oil every ~1,000km. I know this is overkill but fresh oil never hurt an engine. With a bit of preparation, I have managed to keep my oil change mess-free and quick.

This is my Oil Change Kit:

Oil always drips down the centre stand, especially when it gets to the last few drops. I made up a plastic "channel" from an old plastic bottle with a velcro dot (hook) on one edge:

I attach another velcro dot (loop) on the centre stand:

And the plastic "channel" is then attached to the centre stand:

No-mess oil drain:

Also, made up a "funnel" from an old 1 litre plastic bottle with a short length of plastic tubing inserted through a hole drilled in the lid:

After oil has drained and I have replaced the sump bolt, I insert the plastic tubing into the oil fill hole and secure the bottle with the hook on the scooter swing arm:

I pre-measure ~750ml of new oil using a 1 litre engine oil bottle and tip the whole lot into the "funnel".

It takes a while for the oil to flow into the sump but I don't have to keep watch. I place a piece of rag over the "funnel" to stop dirt falling in, and make myself a cup of tea.

Topping up the last few mls is easy with a small plastic oil bottle.

I am thinking about getting a 2013 PCX150 for my wife and came here to do some research. I usually don't post until I have made an introduction but I don't even know if I will be getting a PCX. This thread has brought out what to me seems to be an important question.

From what I am seeing posted here there is no mention of an oil filter only the oil screen. Is this all the filteration the PCX150 has? On almost all other vehicles there is an oil filter that needs to be replaced also.

As to changing oil cold or hot the best answer is to get the engine up to operating temprature and let it cool down enough to touch the oil drain plug without getting burned. The oil inside will still be thin enough to allow it to drain leaving only a then film behind but not hot enough to burn you, unless you let your hand sit in the oil too long.

Yes. The oil screen is all that most scooters have. Heck, my 1986 Honda Elite 250 only has a screen and it's still running fine after all these years.

If the oil is a good quality and is changed at the correct intervals an oil screen is fine. The trick is to have the engine hot enough to evaporate any moisture in the engine but not hot enough to burn or carbonise the oil. The cooling system is the key to a reliable motor. Excessive tuning can increase combustion temperatures that the cooling system can't cope with causing premature failure of engine components. It's all a balancing act really.

Nice tidy bit of work. Makes my duct tape and funnel look a bit amateurish

Nice to have choices and I think I might be leaning towards the side stand method for simplicity

Any ideas for using that old oil?
I coat my garden tools (shovels and the like) after use. Keeps the rust at bay especially before winter kicks in. Along the lines of OCD, hey Goss?

Actually WhiteNoise, like you, I do use some of the old oil to coat my tools. I dissolve the oil in kerosine and use a spray bottle to spray the solution onto the tools. It is a nice, simple way to keep the rust at bay. The rest goes to the recycling depot. I suppose the attached poarer is a little overkill. OCD? Maybe.

I want to warn everyone. When changing the oil in the gearbox broke in half the lower drain bolt. The tightening torque according to a manual 23Nm. Lucky that the bolt was in the oil and using tweezers, screwdrivers, wire, twisted thread residue, spending 2 hours. Ordered a new one, but now I will twist, as always, by hand, rather than relying on figures.

I have a portable fire /heater called a Salamander that runs on waste oil... keeps my garage nice and warm.

I use full synthetic oil in our bikes. Everytime I change oil I pull the screen and check/clean it. So far, after the first oil change, there hasn't been anything in the screen to clean. I like your inventions for a clean oil change and may do that on mine. Thanks.
