Sad news Today. We had to put Miss Pearl down. She was my favorite, and our smallest dog. She had been sick for 3 months but the vet couldn't figure out what it was. Finally the senior vet took her in and ran tests for cancer. She was 9 years old and only weighed 9 pounds when she died. Her normal weight was 11 - 12 pounds. She use to meet me when I came into the house with a special "woo woo" instead of just a bark. She was always so happy that we would kid that her tail was going to fly off if she wiggled any harder. I loved that dog dearly. I will miss her even though we have 2 others.

We lost our pointer-foxhound at only 9 years (we got here when she was maybe two) due to bladder cancer, and it was so sad watching her go. Throwing money at some medications gave us another six months or so, but the end, even though expected, sucked. We had our Shepard-dobie cross for nearly 16 years - we were spoiled.
The Admiral, however, loves having a dog. We found our current meat-head on our first trip to the pound. (see Rusty back on page three of this thread).
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

Wow Mel, I'm really sorry to read this. It brings back memories of losing my dog as well. Oh! what a horribly sad day that was. We get so attached, they are indeed family, no matter what anybody says. RIP Miss Pearl

Sorry to hear that. Really miserable times when it happens.
This was my lil Bambino. (His real name was Calvin.) When we got him at 10 weeks old, the vet said he probably wouldn't make it to 6 months old because he had serious medical problems. So, we did our best to take good care of him and we loved him. He only grew to be 2 lbs, but he thought he was a St. Bernard. He lived a long and happy life. He died last year at age 15 years. We miss him dearly. But, we have very fond memories of him.
I don't mean to make this a big bag of downers. He was our best friend and I wanted to share his happy face with you.
15 years. wow that is a long time for a little dog to wiggle into your heart. One of ours lasted 16 1/2 years and we still miss him. I think they have one mission on this earth. Make people smile. It is people who change their mission. Miss Pearl was like a piece of bright sunshine. She saw the world as a happy place to be in and she loved people, but especially me. I had gone up to get another do at the breeder's place when I saw her. I told her I would be back for her, and I came back. From then on she came running if she was out back playing and I just tapped once on the window. When we went to bed at night she would make sure I was in bed before she went to her spot. Otherwise, she would follow me around or lie by our heater in the living room where we spent our evenings. Dogs, unlike cats, only want one thing in life...to make people happy in return for some kindness.

She certainly was a cutie, Mel. it will be hard, these next few days and weeks. I've had to do this 4 times now. just look at the beginning of this thread and you will smile. then, when you are ready, it will happen all over again. not another Miss Pearl but you will save another dog. And, they will save you too!

It's awful isn't it?
When we got our puppy, who is lying over my feet at the moment, my son said the he never wanted her to die. Terrible thing is after owning many dogs I now exactly how she is going to die. That'll be my doing.
My condolences, Mel. She's in a better place now. It's amazing how fast time flies with them. We've had Maddie for almost 6 years now, and she hasn't slowed down a bit. I'll be devastated when her time comes, but you're really right -- they're here to make us smile, and no pup does it better than a little terrier. We have to make the most of the short time we can enjoy with them. I'm sure you showed her a great life.
