Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
I also conversed back and forth with mosato about using sliders in the setup and we agreed that the roughened surface would be detrimental to sliders. In a ruckus thread someone claimed to have a set of sliders worn out in 1000km in a variator with rough ramps.
I have been out of school for six years and have recently gone back so I have finals in 10 hours. Political science and CAD. After tomorrow I will try to begin my testing as long as the weather melts more of our ice.
I'll update you all soon.

I'm dying myself! It's been in the teens here, degrees ferenheit. All our ice will be gone tomorrow so I might start then. I'll put my small screen back on and go from there. I'll probably just report my findings, though I may get gutsy enough to take a picture at speed.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
I believe I've shortened my testin to simply the NCY and the yuminashi.
Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
Just a cautionary note.
If you look at Yuminashi site it cautions against using a 150 belt. They use a 125 belt. Which I assume is narrower? If you use a 150 belt if will according to the warning only last about 15 kms. Again I assume because it will rub on the casing or...
I'll have to go and buy a couple of belts and see.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
Thank you for your concern. I've spoken with yuminashi about this. The belt they recommend is the stock size belt in a reinforced model. The stock belt will stretch, squish and break in a very short amount o time. The 125 belt is shorter than the esp belts. The 125-150 esp models share the same belt.

Hi you made this statement in a different thread.
I'm sure it does something but what above others and why?
Just wondering what your opinion is based on? Back-to-back test , experience of others?Yuminashi is supposed to be the best product hands down

Waspmike,
Kind of a loaded question.
Shouldn't front your questions with a disclaimer of sorts considering your area of interests?

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
I don't consider the question loaded? A statement was made. I am just curious why? Maybe it is simply one man's opinion.
My hobby is variators and how and why they work the more information the better. There are at least 6 plus or more different variators each with their own fans Some may work better on certain scooters. True I haven't done the amount of testing that Pcxdeamon has done, but I am still interested.
My curiosity is that a certain manufacturers unit was supposed to be the best so I am just curious why that is. Maybe it is . Who knows?
I can only base an opinion on what I see and it may not be the same information that other people have.
Someone on a different thread said 90% of improvement can be made by simply changing weights. That also maybe true but again there is no factual data. Dr Pulley sliders work for some people, but which ones? It seems a lottery.
At the end of the day it only matters if an individual is happy with what he has, and how he rides.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
I'm going to attempt to do my testing today. I'm starting with a new Daytona reinforced belt on the ncy variator.
Why is Yuminashi SUPPOSED to be he best? Yuminashi's engineer has 30 years of expierience tuning Honda Minis to start with. The variator has a rough texture to the upper parts of the ramps to slow the rollers as they get further out and allow more time to reach peak rpms. The faces of the pulley have FOUR different profiles to change power in the rpm range. These features SHOULD make this the best variator for our application. Again I said it SHOULD be the best variator.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
so it seems like ill be testing the kn kikkaku vario at the same time they are known for more torquey feeling in the ruckus world. this one has a taller angle than factory so we shall see shortly.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
Well I completed some testing on the stand today. I got 79mph for the NCY and 81mph for the Yuminashi. I was expecting more in the range of 90mph for the latter. I have shot an email over to masato and I expect I will hear back from them by morning. I was hitting the rev limiter on both runs. I'll try and upload the videos.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
Well... The yuminashi variator is stron through the midrange. Rpms seem to be lower than before. I'm guessing this is because of the multiple angles on the drive face. Something else for consideration... I think I'm goin to try the factory rollers in it tomorrow to see what if anything it does to affect the top speed.

Anyway, the pcx feels very strong throughout the power band. It feels very punchy.

Re: Yuminashi variator and belt
I was thinking this morning. Dangerous for a man to do, I know. The speed booster came with a picture diagram to show where things went and I'm wondering if the shim is in the incorrect place. I'm going to swap the shim from behind the backing plate to between the backing plate and the variator. My second thought is that I'm not sure which backing plate I used; the NCY and the honda backing plates look alike to the casual eye. I'll switch these things and get some results today.
