I've had my Tech license for about 3 months, I'll help if I can.

All I did was read this study guide a few times...
http://www.kb6nu.com/tech-manual/
and took the practice exam about 50 times.

I won't say the test questions are easy but I never saw any that were misleading or tricky in any way.
This seems pretty cool also, (just found it)...

Hams and BR riders do seem like very similar demographics.

Got my license tonight. Now just gotta wait for the call sign to show up. Any recommendations on handhelds that aren't too expensive?

I've been out of it so long, I'd be interested in what's out there now.

Congrats on your license!logepoge1 wrote:Got my license tonight. Now just gotta wait for the call sign to show up. Any recommendations on handhelds that aren't too expensive?
As far as equipment recommendations go, I'm pretty new at this as well. the only radio I have any experience with is the Bao-Feng UV5R+.
http://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-UV-5R-Dua ... B0097252UK
It's cheap. (I paid about $42.00 for it.) And it seems to work fairly well, I can reach 2 of the local repeaters from my house if I'm outside. (about 8 miles each.) I was also able to pick up the NWS in the mountains of Western North Carolina. (about 20 miles.)
It's been said by many that the only problem with the UV5R+ is that it's a PITA to program unless you use a Laptop with CHIRP programming software. (free). So make sure you get the programming cable with it.

Yeah I've read reviews on amazon. Looks like good starter. I have about 3 repeaters and 2 of which are right here on campus

You you have you considered for once not interrupting a thread that no one wants you in? Have you considered that?

Re: Anyone a ham op?
It is always a good idea to look into joining a local ham radio club. There you will find a lot of people with similar interests as well as a goldmine of knowledge. That Baofeng is really nice for the money but if you are new to ham radio you will definitely need some help setting it up. There again the club comes in handy. Welcome to the world of ham radio. Hi all,
VK2ISA here, if you are looking for a cheap way to play with vhf repeaters you might want to have a look at Echolink, a computer program you can sign into and access repeaters all around the world
http://www.echolink.org/
While I realise it's not true radio it is still very entertaining and can be a good guide to future vhf interests, ie; reapter work, propagation, tropospheric ducting etc
Cheers
