PCX-150 Question about collision damage

Post by foggyhelmet »

Was smacked by an oncoming vehicle on the left side of the bike. Scratches, dings. The only major damage was the case holding the air filter. I'm assuming that's fairly important -but my question is exactly what will happen if I ride around while the case is still half off? It's actually broken in half and the bottom portion of the case I am holding in my hand.

I could superglue it, but I am also curious if tiny cracks that remain would still make much of a difference.

There is a tiny valve on the broken piece of the case I am holding in my hand. Looks like the air exit valve and what produces the much quieter noise when driving. I am guessing because while the case is half off the bike is much louder.

It's eventually going to be replaced with a new case, but in the meantime is my bike safe if that is the only problem?

If the filter box is broken depending on where it's broken there might be unfiltered air getting drawn into the engine. It may cause excessive engine wear if not repaired. My advice would be to get it repaired asap.

If it is just the outside cover(airbox) that is damaged you should be fine to ride it, but make sure the inside cover is not cracked etc.
I would just ditch the whole airbox and get a pod filter. ;)

Could you provide a bit more description on what a pod filter is? I tried a google search but I was still not sure what I was looking at.

Is this a disposable unit as opposed to the standard air filter box? :geek:

Go to ebay and type in "pod filter" you will see many different styles.

Here is the popular one on this forum, the K&N r-1100
works fine on the stock pcx150, but it is loud(like a performance exhaust sound).

This looks like the filter I had on my old Ducati 900 GTS, straight onto the carb. No filter box required.

The 900 SS just had wire grilles and no filter.
SS, Jota, LeMans..... Ah those were the days.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong
