How long does it actually take to remove the engine for a cam swap or should I try it with the engine installed?

I changed my cam on the bike, but when it came time to install my exhaust valve spring (PITA) I removed the engine and it was way easier.

I have changed loads of valve stem seals on car engines without taking the heads off. You need to make sure the piston is at top dead centre first. The rocker arms need to be out of the way so the cam would need to be out also. We had a tool that bolted onto the head and it had a claw on it to push down on the valve spring cap. A dunt with a hammer whilst pushing it down released the collets and you could take the spring off without it dropping into the combustion chamber. The seal/spring etc could be changed. The refitting was the reverse of removing. A bit of grease on the collets helped or putting them in with a small telescopic magnet and bobs you uncle.

I could do a 6 cylinder in 1 and a half hours instead of the days work to take the head off and refit it.

I suppose it's easy to strip the engine in a pcx once it's out and it can get a bit of a decoke at the same time.

I've done valve stem seals on several cars with the heads on. I'm just curious if the cam can be swaped without draining the coolant system. I'm using a takegawa cam so I don't need to replace the valve springs. This is a straight forward can swap.

use either compressed air into the cylinder or rope to keep the valves in the head. swap out the cam and your done... use a socket and hammer to break the loose the retainers and keepers.

You can do the cam without dropping the engine, but it's a bitch to do. I'd remove it to make sure it's done right.
