New or Used?
HI
I'm new to this forum and have a question.
Since jumping up in power from my PS125i which I had for 6 years trouble free scootering, I went for the Piaggio BV350. Within a year it was stolen. After the insurance paid out I bought another BV350 (new) and yesterday after only having it for 4 weeks, it too was stolen! I can hardly believe it.
Anyway my question ; I've had it with high powered scooters, as they seem to attract thieves like flies to a honeypot. I am going to jump back to a Honda 125 PCX as I know Honda scooters are incredibly reliable.
But should I buy new or used do you think?
Thanks
Dan

Re: New or Used?
Hmm. Are you getting good reimbursement from your insurance or are you having to shell out more money each time? Will your insurance rates be going up after two thefts? Are you planning on increasing your security or parking in a safer place?
Sounds like you need a used PCX like the one gn2 (a list member) recently sold. Something that looks like shite but is well-maintained. The worse looking the better to make it unattractive to thieves. Or get a big guard dog (see picture at left).

2013 PCX 150 [now an ex-bike, soon to be consigned to the bottom line of the sig]
2013 Silver Wing ABS (Black)
1971 BMW R75/5 (White)
Too many ex-bikes to list, and, besides, who really cares what we used to own?

Re: New or Used?
With your kind of luck, I would say get a used PCX. However, before you do anything investigate the theft rate of smaller bikes in your area. There must be a way to do that. That would give you a better idea of which way to go.

Re: New or Used?
You had two bikes stolen but what security did you have active at the time and where were they parked?

Re: New or Used?
If I was buying a 125 for city use it would be a Lexmoto Vienna.

Re: New or Used?
What is it, a Chinese scooter with a classic name? It says that it has a 4 stroke air cooled engine. At least the pcx has a water cooled engine.

Re: New or Used?
Lexmoto is a UK brand, the scooter is manufactured in China.
Equivalent spec Vespa costs three times as much.
And is air cooled.
Which means simpler maintenance.

Re: New or Used?
Typically you get what you pay for. A lower price usually means lesser quality.

Re: New or Used?
Price paid is no guarantee of quality,
Expensive stuff breaks too.
The most expensive scooter on the market has a raft of problems which you would never have with a Lexmoto.

That's why I used words like "typically" and "usually". The only two things I know of that are guaranteed in this life is death and taxes.

Re: New or Used?
Looking at it another way, at £1100 otr if you ride it for a year then just throw it in a skip, the depreciation will be about the same as you would lose on a new PCX.

I had to fork out loads more money to buy the 2nd bike, so I'm massively out of pocket. Insurance rates have gone up too so I think you're probably right in the second hand looks like shite scoot.
I like the idea of a guard dog too......

Thanks. That's a great idea.Mel46 wrote:With your kind of luck, I would say get a used PCX. However, before you do anything investigate the theft rate of smaller bikes in your area. There must be a way to do that. That would give you a better idea of which way to go.
Re: New or Used?
Had a lumo chain and padlock which cost 80 quid. I reckon a van came along and two heavies lifted it out of the bike bay it was in (on a busy London's West End street) and onto the van.iceman wrote:You had two bikes stolen but what security did you have active at the time and where were they parked?
The first bike had a chain and padlock on the rear wheel also.
First bike was parked in Holborn and the other parked in Howland Street off Tottenham Court road. So very busy London streets.
