Faulty fuel gauge?

Faulty fuel gauge?
Right.
From the dealership, rode it about when the needle went into the red, filled her up with 8 ltres of fuel.
Second tank
Set the trip meter, 165miles later @ 86mpg (UK), Needle is at the bottom of the red.
Went to fill her up, 4 litres. Less than half the first fill up.
So..
Has the petrol pump screwed up my one of my bills.
Is my fuel gauge up to 50% inaccurate.
What is the normal range of it? I was being frugal on my riding.
Should I take it back to the dealership?

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
The fuel gauge shows "empty" when you still have some gas in the tank. This is the "reserve".
I believe the Forza shows "empty" when you have about a gallon of fuel remaining.

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
Use the trip meter and economy meter.
The fuel gauge is totally useless even when its working OK.

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
I get that there is a reserve, usually only enough for about 30 miles or so.
You are saying a Gallon?! Thats 1/3 of the tank. and about 70 miles. That doesn't strike you as odd?

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
Fuel gauges in small tanks are usually very inaccurate.
Odd to rely on them, normal to use the tripmeter.

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
Did not know this... was totally reliant on the fuel bars. So you fill your 2 gal tank and set the trip as your default display then fill up when you are approaching 200 miles. This is news to me, but that's why I'm heregn2 wrote:Fuel gauges in small tanks are usually very inaccurate.

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
So I did some maths
Filling from Empty at gauge after having gone 160miles @ 86 mpg (UK)
Fuel bought to fill £11 @ £1.30/ltr = 8.33ltr = 1.83 UK Gallons = 2.19 US Gal
1.83gal x 86mpg = 157 miles so mpg meter is pretty accurate.
According to Honda Specs, Tank is 3 Gallon (I assume US) this converts to 2.5 UK Gal
So...
When the needle said empty I had (2.5 -1.83=0.67UK Gal) remaining
0.67UKGal x 86mpg = 57.62 Miles remaining.
My max range should be about 220 Miles
When my fuel gauge hits empty I still have 1/3 of my tank left or 57 miles.
Does that sound about right? Isn't 57 miles a bit large for a "reserve tank"

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
Not sure if you have a Forza or PCX but I had the same issue on my new Forza. I got 130miles before I showed below "E" and freaked out. Filled it up with only 2 gal....still had another gallon to go. I've been using the trip counter and mpg display and it's spot on. I'm averaging about 64mpg and I stop at 175miles or so to fill up on 2.5 gal (about $7 here).
I think I'm going to drive the forza down to the beach next week. It's about 3 hours each way and should be good if I leave early enough in the morning while the sun isn't up all the way...hang out on the water all day and cruise back just before the sun goes down. What could possibly go wrong on a 3hr road trip on a scooter on back roads at night???

Hay supermattyp,
I would like you to remember us Brits next time you wanna complain about the cost of fuel!
You paid $7 for 2.5 US Gallon which is roughly 2 UK Gallon (guestimate) and being generous around £2 a gallon.
While fuel varies here the cheapest I can get it is £1.26 a Litre, I have be reliabley informed (Google) that it works out £5.73 per UK Gallon.

Re: Faulty fuel gauge?
So, I'm being brave and pushing the tank now and I am hitting 200 miles, No idea how much I have left, but by my math it's about 20 miles and I don't want to find out how close I am to empty. Thats still 50 miles after my gauge says I'm empty.
ran out of gas - doh.
I actually ran out of gas, if you can believe it! The trip odometer was at 347 km or converted: 215 miles. I have sworn now to always fill up at 300km. Fortunately the tank is relatively new so pretty clean I'm guessing, as it started up on first crank. Lucky but embarrassed.

What's an English muffin. Is it something rude?

Here's one I could happily do some very rude things with.
