On Board Cameras
Anyone else have a Camera/Action Cam on their Bike or Helmet?
I just got the Sony HDR-AS30V
i've used the 3M Dual Lock on the side of the waterproof Case and on the side of the Visor,
tried it on the Helmet itself but the position was wrong,
I usually always keep my Visor in the same position (1 click up) so should work ok,
unless i'm at the Traffic Lights and my Visor steams up and I have to open it wider,
i'll then be filming a bit of the Sky but never mind.
I've also added a cord strap to the waterproof Case which i'll then have around my Neck/Scarf/Coat,
JUST INCASE the Dual Lock fails me, the Camera wont fly down the street!
but looking at YouTube Videos of people doing the same thing, and the speed they go and so on...
their Cameras haven't fallen off, so me doing 30-60mph i'm sure will be fine.
Anyone else have one?
or a GoPro etc?
how do you prefer they're mounted?
I could of got a proper Helmet mount but they make the Camera stick out too far from the Helmet, which I hate!
I don't really want to draw too much attention to it, so wanted it as close as possible.
Just charging it now, and will go for a ride to test it later :-)
Got a photo of a Helmet with the strap and mount, which I think makes the Camera stick out too much, and then a photo of mine....

Re: On Board Cameras
I need one in my area :-( so many times i've nearly been hit due to Cars pulling out or being total idiots, or kids running out, or people throwing things out of the Window infront etc, that's why I tried to get the smallest Camera, the Drift and GoPro are too big, this Sony is small and light, and went for the AS30V as the Case is 35% smaller than the previous Cases... no more having to remember licence plates and so on!

Re: On Board Cameras
I'd like to get one. Leaning towards the Garmin Virb Elite because I want the telemetry data in the film or the GoPro Hero3 because I can buy the little GoPro add-on that lets me use the Sena mic so I can talk during the filming. If only there was a plug-in for the Sena to use with the Garmin, would be perfect.
Don't want to mount it on the helmet, especially since it's modular. I was planning to use an extended handlebar mount and have it above the windscreen.

Re: On Board Cameras
I have a ram mount on my bike that I use for mounting my standard Kodak camera, which has a video mode. It works quite well when I hook it up, which hasn't been much this year since my wife's pcx has been in the shop so long.

Re: On Board Cameras
The sony cam setup looks nice but I would not recommend putting the strap around your neck. If you were to have an accident and the camera got caught on something as you flew through the air, Ouch !!!

Re: On Board Cameras
Hey stryder, it was just to test it that day, but the Dual Lock seems really solid so i've taken it off now :-)
Re: On Board Cameras
Was using a gopro 3+black sidemounted to helmet, even with the smaller case there was alot of wind drag at speed. I switched to a Contour +2 and have that sidemounted without the waterproof case, wind drag is much better at speed. Gopro now works on the tank and tail (on a motorcycle) for 2nd angle on trackdays and canyon runs.
I think the gopro is by far the best action camera with the most features but the profile is one of the worst. If i was in the market again and only looking for video action cam i'd probably get the Replay 1080 for the lipstick size profile.

Re: On Board Cameras
Yeah, chin mounted really is the way to go. My RF-1100 doesnt have a large enough flat spot in the chin to get the sticky on right, or maybe im just not trying hard enough.

Re: On Board Cameras
I have the Sony and it works well and is more aero than the gopro but I might try to change the focus as it is a bit too close.

Re: On Board Cameras
Well, I took my bike out recently with the camera attached. This is the first time I have used the camera with my PCX. Previously, when I had my Burgman, I had the camera attached to it. What I found out this time around is that if I use a long arm on either of the Ram Mounts that I have on my PCX, the vibration is so bad that the movies are jittery. Also, there is no way to NOT shoot through the windshield on it. My conclusion is that the only good way to shoot while on the PCX is from a helmet cam of some sort. That is a little disappointing, since I don't have $250 - $300 for a good helmet cam.

Re: On Board Cameras
I paid about £150 for the Sony HDR-AS30V, and then paid £8 for 1m of 3M Dual Lock, that's it, that Dual Lock is amazing, some on my Helmet, some on the Camera Case, snap them together, then I can hold the Camera itself and wiggle it etc and it doesn't come apart from the Helmet at all.. footage is good, obviously can see a bit of my Visor but it's mostly what's around me, and with a clear Visor anyway you can see through it.... but yeah attaching them to your Bike with the vibration gives horrible footage!
These are my Videos so far, I have a lot more to go on but, again, upload time is dreadful, few hours just for 1 file, and when uploading.. it slows down the download speed obviously so everyone in the house moans!
