Engine knocking

OK, so mr idiot here hasn't checked his oil, at all.....

Its been cutting out recently, and has developed a knock from the engine area. I've checked and the poor little thing was bone dry, so I've put in half a litre (didn't even register on the dipstick), run it again and whilst its not quite as knocky, it still is doing it.

I plan to drain the oil out, refill, see if it cures it and re-lubes the internals properly, but tbh I think the damage may be done.

It still runs fine, it seems to pull a little less hard on the initial acceleration, but it still pulls to higher speeds ok and idles fine.

I've read possible crank bearings, or ultimately piston and block could be scored, but without stripping I won't really know.

Anyone else been silly enough not to check the fluids and suffered the same issue? Engine replacement or could it be the bearings?

Impossible to know without taking apart, knocking mostly points to bearings, is it smoking? I think I would not run it and take off the cylinder to check play in the con rod and cam bearings. Not a mechanic but I think these 2 would be the first to go.

If you starve the engine of oil a likely problem area is the small end bearing.
These have been known to fail on other Honda 125 engines.
When the small end fails it can cause damage to the cylinder bore and piston.
The engine can do a good impression of a grenade if not seen to pronto.

OK, next question, its a 2010 PCX, so I'm eyeballing engines online (not cheap for a 125cc engine!!), but is there any major differences between the engines? Currently looking at a 2013 engine, but I've seen that some of the engines are slightly different. As I've got the current engine, can I just buy a newer engine and still do a straight swap?

I would just take off the cylinder to check, maybe just the little end bearing

The mounting points are different. You want the earlier non ESP engine.

If it's knocking don't use it, you'll only get stranded somewhere when it goes kabluey

Anyone got one for sale, most miffed as the one I have only has 6000 miles on it. Might end up stripping and seeing if I can rebuild it.

Surprised it used all that oil in less than 6000 miles, do you have a leak?

I've only owned it for 2k miles, only ride it 12 miles total per day. I'm very surprised its used all the oil too, it doesn't smoke or anything and it still runs ok, but the noise is certainly metal bumping metal. No leaks present either. I'm mostly angry at myself for not checking (its the daily work hack to the station and I've not really bothered doing anything other than jump on and ride, to my own misfortune).

Doesn't seem to be any 2010-2012 engines available at the moment, so now got the decision whether to strip it down, and see how extensive the damage is, or carry on looking for another engine. At £350+ for an engine, and £1300 odd for another complete bike, I'm also thinking of stripping it as all the panels are brand new (cat d bike) and I could probably get a good few hundred back in parts.

If it runs fine isn't the best answer, especially if it decides to seize on me on the motorway at 60mph lol.

I've only checked my oil twice in 6 months, and hope all is well when I do not find oil leaks on the bike or floor. For you to loose all that oil and say it's not leaking oil after re-filling seems odd. Did you have a 600 mile service?

Have you checked the exhaust header bolts are secure and gasket fitted properly?
Sounds like a blowing exhaust on the video.
