Ordering the wrong helmet

Ordering the wrong helmet
It seems like this is the 2nd time I have to return a helmet back to Amazon. I'm just not a fan of the ones I've purchased. These are my requirements. Any ideas?
I have a scooter so I don't need anything fancy.
* It needs to be a full face helmet.
* a shaded visor comes down with the press of a button
* chin curtain
* under $150
* US DOT certified
Possible?

Try http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/ - you can return for refund or exchange at no cost to you - items over about £20. Used them many times and they are one of the best companies to deal with and have loads of feedback on each product.

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
What didn't you like about the helmets you already tried? What shape is your head? (round, oval, long oval, etc.) Crashing a scooter isn't safer than crashing a motorcycle, the ground and telephone poles and other vehicles are just as hard no matter what you ride. Look here--webbikeworld.com for lots of good information and reviews about helmets.

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
I have bought 4 helmets on Craigslist. Even if the helmet fits when you first try it, you won't really know how it will feel when you are riding for 30 minutes. I was able to buy them at $40-50. One that i didn't like at first has become my favorite.

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
Re my recommendation - sorry, forgot to check the locale and your in the US not USA.
Shark S700 is a great helmet - some on sale here for £129 and is certified, has pinlock, drop down sun visor (up/down via small lever), fully removable lining. Should be available for less than that in dollar terms, assuming Shark sold in US.

You have some poor shops then, my dealership sold me a helmet for £65, been a good one for about two years now.butch3r wrote:lol. Go to a big shop that sells a zillion helmets.
Try them on - when you find one that fits - wear it around the shop for 20 mins. If still good, write it down, keep this up until you find no more helmets. Go home - search out best price online & buy.
You CANNOT buy a helmet without wearing it!
You'll be sorry if you do...

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
I bought two helmets (different makes) on-line for £40 each, perfect fit me fine, both DOT/ECU rated, comfortable, and for town speeds are fine - probably be nosy on motorways but I cannot ride on those yet. - one's a BOX and the other is a SHOX flip helmet. From UK shops like Lids, sportsbikeshop or ghostbikes, you can send them back for refund if you like - SBS does not charge for return! Must be places like that in the US.
I've also tried on two other more expensive helmets my mates have - one's a Shark s700 and the other is a more expensive carbon (slightly lighter) Nolan helmet. Of the four the only one that is a strange fit for me is the Nolan (it seems their larger sizes are smaller than other makes). The box (L), Shox (L but with changeable XL to go with a balaclava in winter time) and the L Shark all fit me just fine - comfy but not too tight nor loose (which is a bad thing).
I've not found many helmets that are a bad fit - just a bit small or large dependant on make/liner.
Yet I went through 5 or 6 makes of ski helmet to find one that fits me right!

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
Please watch some videos by pros to see how a helmet should fit....
Helmets and heads come in various shapes. Buy the best fitting helmet that you can afford, for yourself -----and for your loved ones.
Also, experts will tell you - never buy or wear a helmet used by someone else. No Craig's list helmets!!

It depends, some helmets are worn only once or twice and then sold because they are uncomfortable or don't fit. Perfectly usable and can be a way to get a much better helmet for the same price as a cheapo
Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
The issue with a used helmet is that rarely will you know squat about its actual history.
I have never heard or read of a safety conscious veteran rider advocating the use of a used helmet.

But there is the alternative of a bit of common sense and judgement.

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
Just find a dealer that'll let you try some on. If you find one you like, make note of the brand, model name, and size, and go order one online if you think you're getting overcharged locally.

Re: Ordering the wrong helmet
Along the lines of what Valiant said above, I'd like to add:
If possible, it would be nice to Support the community in which you live. If you visit a local shop and you find a well fitted helmet, just come right out and ask the salesmen "If his price is set in gold,"
in other words, "Is That Your Best Price?" Immediately add, that you will be going online to compare pricing, But! you Really would like to support his establishment by purchasing it there. (All contingent on his price).
This fun fitting visit would more than likely turn into a win/win situation. Both of you happy
