Hi all,

I've been riding for two years and have recently sold my 2006 Vespa.

I have been looking at a new PCX and wanted to know some of the costs involved. I pretty much did all of the work on my Vespa which made it cheap to run but it was getting old with more and more needing to be done.

I do around 6000 - 7000 miles a year

How long is the warranty from UK Honda?

I understand that the first service is at 600 miles but what are the service intervals after that? and how much are they averaging in cost? (London / Surrey area)

How many miles are you getting from your tyres and how much is a tyre change?

Apologies for starting out with questions but just like to do my research with owners rather than dealers

I was quoted by one salesman of around £200ish including doing valves, but cannot say for your area. I'm in Norfolk. Servicing seems to vary between dealers and locations. I asked the same question on here. One poster paid around £80 I think for the first service but that did not include checking the valves as I recall. The salesman who sold me my PCX said it was less than £80 because (as he said) it only needed an oil change! Honda say the valves should be checked at 600 miles and at every 2,500 miles after the initial service! From what I've read and understand the valves rarely seem to go out of spec after the first service. I'm considering letting the dealer do the first service, buy a proper factory manual and do future servicing myself to cut down costs.

How many miles are you getting from your tyres and how much is a tyre change?

Cannot really comment as I've only had my new PCX for less than 500 miles. I think I read 8000 miles but I may be wrong.

I was quoted as £900 for all five services (the 1st was £73 but when I paid they added 'green charge' and VAT at %20!) - cost rose from £73 to £210 later on, so about £900. Some places seem cheaper and one person paid about £400 up front for all five services! You can do it yourself, but £400 is not too bad over 2yr's if it keeps the warranty with no hassle.

OEM fitment PCX rear tyres last about 5000 miles and fronts last around 20,000 miles.
Michelin CityGrips last longer.
D-I-Y servicing will invalidate the warranty, so if you want to D-I-Y, as well to get a used one.
If you are buying used get an ABS equipped S-wing, its a far better scooter.

Thanks for the replies, I don't want to DIY for now so I would be taking it to the dealer for the services while in warranty, are the intervals mileage and months or just mileage? As I would cover 2500 miles nearly every 4 months!

Wow, £900 for two years servicing seems alot!!

I had city grips on the Vespa so I know they are good too.

But new Vespas are 6000 miles.... so although more expensive to buy, are cheaper to run with less depreciation and far higher cool factor.
The new Forza 125 is 4000 miles and the Forza 300 is 8000 miles.

Unless I'm trying to get something warranted, I'll do my own service. Being in the car and bike biz all my life, even a good tech has a bad day. I'd rather screw it up myself.

I checked my rear tyre two days ago and like you, with just over 5000 miles on the clock, my rear shows hardly any signs of wear and I've not had any issues rain or shine in 14 months of riding. I only commute across town and do not ride WOT 60mph on A roads, just mostly 30 and occasionally 40 when roads allow, and now due to 'shudder' I do not go too easy on the thottle from stand-still. Should get well over 10000 miles on it at this rate.

Maybe not the same tyre as fitted to earlier model?
The IRC rear tyre as fitted to the original body shape PCX wore down very quickly, there is a report on here of someone getting down to 1mm of tread remaining after just 1700 miles.

Not sure how extra weight would wear a rear tyre down very quickly - we're probably talking the difference of 4 stone max (typical) from say 12-16 stone (I weigh 80KG's so about 12.5 stone). WOFT, breaking hard using the rear tyre, etc, would wear it out more quickly. Indeed, breaking hard using rear brake rather than slowing down and then using engine breaking / mostly front would take it's toll on the rear tyre rubber.

Both front and rear on mine seem to have lost bugger all tread from what I can see.

Its not braking which wears rears out faster than fronts, its transmitting the power to the road.
