Factory Installed Rattle - Solved

Post by fun2scoot »

Like mosquitos landing when trying to make time with your gf, or, her mother's daily call recalling the joys or parenthood...
Or, the really nice guy whose lunch break times with yours; incessantly pondering how third world hunger is our fault...

There's been this annoying rattle, very low volume but high frequency, emanating from the scoot when stopped at lights. Only heard when resounding off the sheet metal of whatever adjacent car.

Dealer: "Can Not Duplicate Problem" Grrrrrr!
So I spent a few hours inspecting every bolt, harness, cable, shroud, plastic...you name it. Finally last week I spent the morning on my back feeling up my bike, and found it!

Image
a loose cotter pin on the center stand. Cut a piece of tubing to fit the end (thought about tape but that might trap dirt in there) and rattle gone.
Peace in our time!

I thought this was what it was on mine, put grease and tape around it so it didnt move at all, but it wasn't the issue,
it's currently at the Dealers having the Engine stripped!

I am going to check this on mine, their is a rattle but it only exists 25-30mph, nowhere else. Not enough to drive me daft since most of the roads near me are national speed limit 60mph.

Still? o.O

I hear a rattle as well, but only if I ride without a helmet :o .

DrewJW did you find this out after?
the Dealers said to me they could only hear it 25-30mph (those exact speeds)
and I noticed you do actually hear it 'more' between those speeds,
but mine is still there after 30, but due to wind etc it is hard to hear, but it is still there...

Got the Exhaust coming tomorrow so i'm hoping I concentrate more on the sound of that than the rattle.

What will keep the piece of tubing from coming off when you are riding? I would have put heat shrink tubing on it and used the heat gun to shrink it tight against the cotter pin.

NICE!, we should all have a look at this
Thanks so much for the excellent detective work. Chief says, "this kind of feed back is priceless".

Checked mine, and it is rock solid, put the rattle to just a noise, it's not intrusive to the level you seem to having.

With the rattle gone, and many miles later I got down and checked the cotter pin again - still tight.
But I think it was not the pin rattling but rather the washer that was making that noise. (the piece of rubber tubing is holding the pin and preventing washer movement too)

I do use earplugs! The airbox is nearly full of 'em. And while I'll admit it's quieter. it seems a little slower. I'm wondering if the plugs weight too much.

Oh....And, I'm Big on safety so a helmet is a must.

This made a HUGE improvement!

Highly recommended!
