Post by homie »

Was interested in a full size Honda this winter but I've changed my mind.

It will be a Panigale... in white of course

Ducati is owned by VW, will be interesting if there is any fallout in that division.

I kinda like the MV Agusta Brutale 675. Not sure I would be comfortable on it, but dreaming doesn't cost much.

Just came back from the dealership and after getting on the Ducati Panigal's hated the aggressive position  However I really liked the Agusta Brutale seating. Ducati is coming out with a bunch of new bikes in November, there are good deals to be had soon on 2015's but I may have fallen completely in love with an odd discontinued Buell Lightning. Its compact, nimble like a scooter but idled like a Harley. It was soooooooooo sexy and just came in trade with 6k miles in beautiful condition. I kept trying to get back over to the new Ducati's but I was mesmerized at the simplicity and design of this strange motorbike. What the heck is a Buell anyway, never heard of it.
The salesman ask if he could demo it for me on the back lot and quoted a ridiculous price to include tuning and detailing as it was just in it had not been through their pre-owned service yet. He let it rip and I watched wondering if it was too much power for me but DAHAM what a stand out design that left the Ducati's wanting in my mind at that point. I need to do some research on this peculiar motorbike. I would expect to pay more and my warning radar is tingling so I left to avoid an impulse buy today.

your opinion will carry weight youyou, can you elaborate? mechanical, comfort, maneuverability? Please I have a feeling it won't be there very long and I need more information fast. Keep in mind the difference is financing a Ducati which I cant find one that seats me well and out of pocket for this used over powered scooter

Buell was made owned by Harley. The Buell Blast has a reputation for being a great smaller bike, but I think Harley lost a fair buck on every one it sold.

If you have the bug for shifting and the price is right, you probably won't loose much money if you flip it in a year or two. Certainly you won't take the financial beating that you will if you buy new.

And don't forget some test "sitting" at http://cycle-ergo.com/

Ducati...hmmm...I had one once. Two problems. First, it spent a lot of time in the shop...a lot. Second...well, let me ask you a simple question. If you can answer it honestly and truthfully then I would have to say go ahead and buy it. The question?? How many tickets can you afford? It attracts them like flys on sweets.

I thank you for that sir, as you can see I'm sitting pretty and that was instant gratification over the very aggressive Ducati position. I guess I just cant understand how a 13 year old bike can only have 6000 miles on it. Good grief I will have that on a 2015 by the middle of 2016 o_O I can't find any serious issues with the 2002 Buell Lightning series or for that matter any of the entire line of Buell, pretty much no ones complaining and Japan awarded bike of the year at the time.. for an American build? One perk is the mechanic races Buell and owns two in the shop decaled appropriately for track so I'm in good hands if there was a problem. I haven't made up my mind tonight just yet... still digging.

Looking for a forum following because they were less than 150.000 sold before Harley and Buell split up. The guy had an eye for what I like, I will give him that. I have to consider that something like this used would monk me all winter, but come spring it would be prestine 8)

Mel you know I'm 56 right? A Ducati would be a trophy. Never rode in the rain, never out when chance of ice, never even going for a power wash and hardly ever going over 60 mph... kinda like my PCX  sponge bath and spit shine. Same would be for a discontinued Buell, pampered, polished and driven like the monk I am.

You know these are belt drive and that front brake is apparently amazing. The stored checked back with me tonight with a report that a 50 point inspection was done after I left. Tires and brakes have half life left and everything else was maintained by the previous owner to the satisfaction of their pre-owned sales. I of course ask for warranty and received a ... no

Only 56, huh. Well I am 69 and still ride. I see a lot of older riders winding up their bikes on the freeway. The problem with the Ducati is that it looks like it wants to go fast, so that in itself attracts the interest of the police. I have seen more Ninja bikes pulled over than an other bike here. Very few, if any Ducatis here, except those ridden by the local motorcycle gangs, which use the freeways as their personal race tracks. Cops are on the lookout for them now. Add a larger rear tire and it smokes tires when it takes off. Good way to attract cops.

I like them all for a short ride then I think I would tire of the position. But I did look at many images of each thanks.

Is it unusual that a sport bike have the fuel tank in the frame? That dome on top of the Buell is not fuel its a breather and the weight mass is lowered because of it. Also there is hardly no frame at all as the swing arm connects directly to the motor thus even more weight is lost. When I saw that I was asking the mechanic if he had ever had a crack in that unique configuration because that would mean new motor o_O never heard of it happening was the answer and I guess that's consistent with tonight's research. I know nothing about sport bikes or their designers but this Buell guy should still be out there because he had some interesting concepts. I did find a few of them for sale on cycle trader, more miles but even better price!

Most of those started at $50k and went up. My favorite is still the Ninja H2 - MSRP right at $50k. I like the carbon fiber wings.

Buell is still around as EBR ( Erik Buell Racing) but the company recently folded under strange circumstances. They were half owned by Hero, a massive Indian company that builds scooters amongst other things. There has been suggestion that the bankruptcy was planned as part of the Hero takeover of the company. Erik Buell is now employed by Hero as a "consultant" and another American chap has bought the manufacturing assets of EBR and plans to get it going again.

then you would think this a bargain today, but when you reach down for the bars it whispers to me... you will be falling off as soon as your arms get tired

And that pretty much kills it for me... even if it is a trophy bike and I still spend most my miles on Shay Whitey. They said they didn't have a twist-in-go Ducati :D
