Autmn bliss

Post by honkerman »

The autumn ride is not for everyone, but for those of use willing to dress for the cold, it is well worth it.

I'm still loving it out there, dark at 5:30, 47 degrees and I have a Sonora 3/4 air tourmaster that's toasty warm right now with all its inserts. These are not for everyone but can be had for little money and loaded with creature features for year round comfort. The second jacket In this video is only 129.00 and is on my Christmas list but I don't think it can replace the Sonora for my colder night rides... we shall see if the Scorpion Tornado gets me out of the Sonora.

Still averaging 60 degrees here (14-17 centrigrade) so is very mild - although there are some rain and flood warnings up north of England (scotland). It will probably get worse Jan/Feb as the colder months have moved on a bit the past 10 or so years, but nice to ride even at 2am.

Very well-written blog.

Love Autumn rides. Something about the feel of a chilled cheeks and the smell of a warm engine, and going from relative warmth to coolness as one rides from sunlight to shade.

It's especially appreciated after our long, hot 4 to 5-month summers here. Near perfect riding weather today, 53 for the low and 75 for the high--though the two-wheeler for me today is a bicycle.

Robert Frost the North American poet? Wow, awesome etc. Not a great fan but bonus points.

Yep, the one who wrote this :D Seriously though Honkerman, if the motorcycle school doesn't work out I'd recommend English teacher as your next gig :)
Robert Frost wrote:The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Well thanks for that. You're not the first to compare my writing to Frost's. He's probably my favorite poet, which likely affects my writing style.

My father was an English teacher and taught me a love of language. My dream job is professional motorsports writer, which I am pursuing. Yes, I'd certainly like to eventually have my own shop, but writing makes me feel alive and writing about motorcycles and scooters compounds the feeling.

We'll see how things go over the next few months. Perhaps one day you'll see my work in Motorcyclist or cycle world or a similar publication.

31F, that's adorable. ;D

Please get some proper riding boots. Normal footwear do not offer adequate protection in the event of a crash. I have old Alpinestar low rise (10") boots, not as protective as mid or high rise boots but they're convenient for day to day riding and they're waterproof. And despite having no insulation, my feet are completely warm in the 2 hours I'm out there at 24-25F temperatures. Not all boots will be like this but read the reviews.

My textile jacket and pants also keep me very warm as well, and the only two things I yearn for are warmer riding gloves (or heated grips and hand covers) and a new helmet with fog resistant visors and a breath box.

Actually picked up a new pair yesterday. My old boots are falling apart. The new ones are craftsman work boots and will eventually get a pair of crocs inserts, but they'll do. I can't afford a $200 pair of riding boots.

All those other things sound nice, but are unnecessary considering that my hands remained warm after nearly an hour's riding and I was sweating a bit inside my coverall. Added bonus, it's bright orange, so nobody can credibly say "I didn't see the guy in the blaze orange suit with the Rowlf the dog helmet cover."

I read more than my fair share of motorcycle and car mag articles and I can say that you would be great at that IMO!

I couldn't either, but I bought my pair used and in very good condition for $40 early this year. It'll probably last me another season or two and I'm not gentle on them.

Glad you're staying warm, just looking out for your safety as well as everyone else's here.
