If so, any tips, or should this really be left to the professionals?

It is fairly easy job to do. If one can change engine oil this an be done at the same time easily.

this is probably the easiest change to do on the bike. I change mine when I change the oil, the link above says it all....

Yes, as the others have said, it's easy. Don't be afraid to do it!
The only deviation I made from the linked instructions is that I did my first change at 3k mi (to put in synthetic), reused the copper sealing washers, & used 15W-50 (Mobil 1).

I know its not an engine overhaul, but I saved approx $200 and the bike feels/sounds better somehow.....I know this is more than likely not the case, but I think ya know what I mean. :) I plan to use a 10w-40 synthetic gear oil next change.
