Almost Dumped my PCX150

Geez...I came very close to dumping my 2015 PCX that has about 350 miles on it. I bought in brand new in November because Honda was giving out a $500.00 credit to move the 2016 models in. I keep this down @ my mothers home in Florida that I visit 4-5 times a year.

Anyway...I was wearing sandals & swung my leg around & it got caught on the seat. Plus my engine was running. She started to dip over & I pulled on the throttle to compensate. Lucky I pulled on the brakes & brought her up somewhat quickly. I know I came within an inch for some sort of damage. I would have been beside myself if I did, as I've owned plenty of motorcycles & scooters in my lifetime & never dumped one!

Note to self? Don't use sandals with scooters & shut-off your scoot when you're putting on it's center-stand. I'm sure if the PCX was a "step-thru" scoot, it wouldn't be such an issue. I'm not getting younger (I'm 50) & it caught me off-guard. I wanted to post this & maybe help someone else that was doing something stupid like I was. Be safe people.

General rule...if it has an engine, sandals are not suitable attire.

Don't beat yourself up too much, I let my street fighter fall and pin me to a chair this winter not realizing the stand was up Then to make it more humiliating I had to call my wife on the phone to help me get the 400lb bike upright... what a loser! Now I'm back with free weights 3-4 times a week for some upper body strength because DAHAM that's just not right at 57.

Sandals are a bad idea, even on a bicycle.

This is my 1st scooter that wasn't a step-thru type. Sandals always did the trick. I always park my scoot on it's center stand (never use the side stand) & when you do so on the PCX you need to take your leg over the bikes seat. That's where my foot got caught. Lesson learned & I'm super lucky I didn't dump it. Never used sandals on a bicycle (you really can't on a motorcycle) I only did this with scooters. I own a Kymco GT300i @ home & used sandals all of the time. Not now.

Ahh, I see your point.
I was talking more about what happens if you go down when you're riding. My experience is that you're going to get hurt if you're wearing sandals.

As a short inseam person, I've often had challenges getting on and off my bikes.

For instance, there was a particularly memorable time when I got my boot laces caught on the centerstand of my husband's cosmetically perfect Vespa.
I ended up hopping on one foot, desperately trying to keep his scooter upright, or at least trying to keep it from falling on top of me.

When we had our scooter accident...both bikes at the same time...we had not expected to have an accident. When you have an accident, you usually do not expect to have it. Dress as though you expect an accident because when it happens you will feel it if you are not dressed appropriately. I was in my full gear. My wife was not. One shoulder surgery and multiple Physical Therapy sessions later, she still is not back to what she was before the accident....and $70,000 in debt because the insurance did not cover as much of it as we had hoped.
You may get by on flip flops and tee shirt for quite a while, but it only takes one accident to ruin your day, and life.

Sorry to hear Mel46. I agree, dress for the crash not for the ride. I used to have the same attitude about scooters and I credit hondapcx.org for hammering the ATGATT idea into me whether it's on a scooter or a motorcycle.

Please please please (yes begging you) wear the proper motorcycle attire. Yes I said motorcycle.
How many motorcycle accidents could members tell you about?
MANY.
Like Mel, who is willing to discuss his and his wife's.

Do your part, protect your body from head to toe the best you can. You only get One!
Do you want to spend you're time riding at length or bodily healing at length?
Not to mention those that never ride again
Stop and Think about that last line ^

If you love riding as much as most of us do, then you want to be prepared as much as possible. Comfort counts! Be sure you're comfortable in your New Biker Clothing. Not tight, not loose. You should be able to move your arms, legs, head freely without feeling pinching. Your Helmet (yes Helmet)
should fit Snug....Not loose.

If you're Not sure about the type, make height safety or kind of boots to buy feel free to ask us
Same goes for the rest of your cyclewear. Ask away!

You've seen This before, "Live to Ride, Ride to Live" (get it?)

In the end, everyone does as they wish. I just can't read a post like this about sandal-wear without opening my mouth and trying to save You. I love our forums and those of you riding along.

Respectfully, the climates in FL and SC mean
that we cannot scooter to the grocery store daily in full motorcycle gear

I was only suggesting footwear
that had toes and heels and secure attachments to the foot, at a minimum

Hey DR, no prob def not pointing finger at anyone. I just really care about everyone riding safely and bodily protected as possible.

Oh yeah! I understand about warm climates and riding attire. I lived in Florida for 15 years and came up to NY just to visit. Right now I'm a New Yorker

Florida is stinkin' hot most of the year. Regardless, I wore all the gear all the time. My biggest problem was remembering to hydrate. I'd get hot at a standstill (traffic lights, etc.) I learned the hard way and I will Never Ever forget it! So important to Hydrate.

I still sweat it out. I'm true to the gear. No matter what the temp.
Especially today they have gear for all weather. You just gotta seek it out. Takes time to investigate all the options, and of course...it takes money. It adds up fast. It can be done.

Yes, I tried to do that for about a year after I moved to SC. Folks thought I was crazy.

But I kept getting dizzy from the heat at traffic stops
and kindhearted grocery clerks kept asking me in my jacket (which I couldn't take off, because it was already sopping wet), "Are you sure you're okay there, honey?"
It was embarrassing.

I know that the heat down south is almost unbearable during the summer. I live in Georgia and it is as hot as the Carolinas. I have a Tourmaster Sonora with lots of mesh. It is a 3 season jacket in that it has removable layers. Most of the time I only wear that outer shell which has all the armor. When we are riding it stays cool enough, but when we stop it is extremely hot. Still, it was hot in September when we had our accident but without that jacket I am sure that I would have been killed or my back would have been broken again. I had a back brace on, knee braces, boots, gloves, jacket, and helmet with the face shield down. After the accident I got up after rolling 40 yards, took off my helmet, and went to help my wife. I was fine. The police were stunned. There happened to be one a few cars back. It was a head on collision involving two trucks at 45 mph each. My wife only had a hi-viz vest on. Broke her shoulder in 4 places. Luckily she had her helmet, gloves and boots on. Her gloves were shredded but her hands only had some bruising.
Get a good jacket and don't forget to wear it. Same with gloves and a good helmet with a full face mask. They will pay for themselves if you ever have an accident.
