Custom Painted Windscreens

Hello all,

I have done up a few custom painted windscreens for Honda PCX (and other bikes) at my shop. I was going to ship a bunch of these back to San Diego to my friends bike shop and have him sell them on Ebay etc. Since this is a PCX forum thought I would get your thoughts on them.

We do custom paint in many varieties at my shop. One of which is Hydro dipping (Water transfer printing), which these are done in.
We do alot of these here in Thailand (and Asia) already, just wondering if you guys think there would be any demand for these in the US (or even European) markets. The Honda MSX 125 , Grom, body kits seem to be a popular choice back home as well.

Again these are hydro dipped and covered in a few top coats of quality clear coat so they stay nice, if cared for properly, just like paint. No stickers or wraps on any of the work I do.

That's great... if not for the fact one would have to ship their windscreen to Tai, pay and wait soooooooo long this would be more popular here in the US.

Interesting thought... For those of us who have removed the stock Honda windscreen to replace it with a National Cycle, Puig, Givi, or other, we had to do something with that old screen. Mine is in my garage. I am very likely never going to use it, or need it again. I'd be more than happy to sell it to anyone who wanted it for a purpose like this. My line of thinking is, send a spare screen to the painter, and still have one to use until your painted one comes back. Then you can send the unpainted one to whomever needs one to use while waiting on a painted one... Maybe some sort of "exchange service" or something? Just an idea...

I most certainly do have one. And it's in nearly pristine condition. I would imagine if I washed it carefully, that it would be close to indistinguishable from a new 2013 screen.

Although I have absolutely no plans to ever sell Natasha, the day very well might come when I do trade her for either a new PCX or perhaps a Burgman, I might just hang on to that screen. I really have no idea what I'd do with the National Cycle windscreen I've replaced the original one with.

Yes understand that point! What we are doing is buying Honda factory parts here in Thailand, Windscreens, body kits etc, Painting them is these types of styles and selling the entire piece to swap out with your old or damaged piece. Takes 10 minutes to install and no waiting!
Like I said am just checking peoples thoughts on them. If enough positive feedback will ship a bunch of these in bulk shipping to my Friends in the States and have them sold/shipped directly from the USA. (Better for shipping times and for buyer confidence I believe!)
We do the same with full custom painted body kits for Honda PCX and MSX 125 / Grom . Do them up in the shop, ship them out to customer, when received change out older panels and have a fully custom painted bike in one day. We do that here in Thailand, Asia (japan) and Australia at the moment. Most people either already have damaged parts they are replacing/upgrading and ditch the old panels or (if in good condition) sell them off etc. Here we do an exchange program, but not really practical , as you mentioned, coming from the USA.

Thinking about 100 US Dollars for the Custom Windscreens, a bit more for the glow in the dark ones, plus postage.

Thanks bud. Basically thats our entire business model, US quality work at Thailand overhead prices= Great, Unique product at Good prices!

The price on these Pcx Windscreen styles are about 100 US plus postage for the Hydro Dip patterns, more for the glow in the dark patterns (not sure yet doing a cost analysis on the glow in the dark pigment) Full body kits range from about 350-500 US dollars plus post depending on the style. Chameleon (Color change paint ) is popular here on our PCX jobs because of the sharp angles and curves of the PCX really show off the color change effect. (350 USD) The Hydro dip in Kryptoflage (Rasta style, Camo) is also popular but a bit more expensive (500) But keep in mind that includes all new plastics ( except the black rougher plastic parts) for the entire bike.

We are also thinking of doing maybe just some 3 or 5 pieces sets. IE fender, 2 front fairings, Back spoiler etc. Or allow customers to pick and chose the pieces they want individually from our website. This allows the customer to lower the price by only buying the parts they want and/or mix match IE carbon fiber fairings, Snake skin Fender and real panels etc etc.

Paint holds up fine, just as a normal paint job would. If taken care of, occasional wax and wash will last for a very long time. The process is basically a paint job with the added Hydro dip process applying the pattern, and then covered in 3-4 clear coats.

Your screens do look nice "from where I sit behind my iPad screen," would they look the same in person? Can we read some reviews from your customers? We need more in this dept.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm liking the idea that you're from the U.S. now over there and making stuff hopefully for back here. We're longing for the same goodies available everywhere for you. So keep talking and sell us.

Im dying at your comments! lol

First the video of what this guy is doing, is not what Im doing! Hes doing "Swirl dipping" which is basically droping a bunch of paint in a bucket and dipping in your parts with no control or idea of what the pattern/outcome will be. Ok if you want and abstract paint pattern, or a Tie Dyed effect on your bike.

What you want to google is Hydro Dipping or Water Transfer printing.
Thats (one of the several) custom paint styles we use here at our shop. The pics of the windscreens are done is this style. Basically its a pre determined pattern (comes in many varieties) printed on a very thin PVC film. You prep your piece, paint to the desired base color color, Lay out them film in a specially designed water tank, spray an activator (chemical solution thats formulated for your particular manufacturers film, that dissolves the the pvc and leaves only your ink (paint) pattern floating on the surface of the water controlled by either a damn system or taped edges to keep the pattern from dissipating.
Then you have about 30-45 seconds to careful dip your piece in a method that transfers the pattern to it, without distorting the pattern, effectively transferring the pattern from a flat surface onto your 3D piece of material, helmet whatever.

Then, if all goes well, you rinse off your piece, dry it, and cover it a clear coat like any other paint job. Now its protected and as good as any other paint or custom paint job.

Google hydro dip and youll see hundreds of videos. Used for bikes, helmets, guns, shoes you name it. Basically, if done properly, is a very affordable alternative to airbrushing, in some cases better because of the micro details it can produce, and the ammount of time saved makes it feasible and affordable enough to do on these types of projects.
At my place we do all sorts of custom paint jobs, this is just one style, but unlike the choppers/Harleys etc, bikes like the PCX, MSX (grom) body panels are cheap enough to buy Honda original parts here, customize them and ship them out to other countries (Or i simply sell them in Asia)
IE no one is going to buy and extra set of Harley Davidson tins unless they have to. Way too expensive. But here I have access to factory Honda parts, Made in Thailand, that we customize and sell entire kits etc.

The color changing paint, Chameleon paint, has been round for a while now. We have probley 10 different variations of just that style of paint. Works well on PCX's because of the sharp body lines in the design. Again this would an expensive choice in many US shops (probley out of the price range most people are willing to put into a PCX. But here i have my own paint mixing machines, import the pigments and mix my own keeping the cost down to a reasonable level.

At the moment we are working on an E commerence website platfor to sell thes eparts outside of our area, but at the moment just to look at some of our work and reviews etc, check out the shops FB page Bright Knight Customs.

To be honest we are full up of work here at the moment anyway, because we are one of maybe only three shops that can do this in Thailand (Lack of available chemicals and materials keeps it that way) and the only "Foreigner owned" company that does it.
But since one of my lifelong friends retired from the Marine Corps and took over a Bike repair/mod shop in San diego I was thinking of shipping some of our stuff back home for sale on the US market, using his shop as a distribution center so to speak.

But before I send a few big boxes back there wanted to test the market feel (see if there was any intrest is these model bikes back home) And get a feel for what people like etc.

Anyway bud take care I'm back off to the spray booth have a Harley in there that is inbetween clear coats!
