I came across this thread yesterday. Thought it might be of some assistance to those who, like me, didn't know how a variator actually works. It helped me understanding it.

Re: How a variator works
I've understood CVTs since I was a wee lad, and that's four decades ago.
My dad had a Daf 55

Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong
Re: How a variator works
Did anyone make a comparison between all the variators sold in the aftermarket? Like comparing the J.Costa x Kitaco x Malossi x stock...
And what about using these variators with stock sliders and Dr Pulleys one...?

Re: How a variator works
No -- no scientific comparison has been made, which is part of why many members are a bit rude towards performance-oriented folks. It's easy to throw on $600 of parts and see a difference, but it takes a lot more work to get into the nitty gritty of it and determine actually WHAT makes a difference. PCXdemon is the closest to actually doing performance analysis for many different parts, reporting on what changed performance and how. From his research, the JCosta doesn't do much, but the Kitaco or DR Pulleys made a difference. His thread is here: http://hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=796Ishida wrote:Did anyone make a comparison between all the variators sold in the aftermarket? Perhaps he'll chime in -- I consider him the most knowledgeable people here about performance.
