Get rid of one source of noise

Post by Oyabun »

Again - as I dismantled my new (to me at least) LED PCX what I have bought as a wreck to be resurrected, I have found one source of noise and the way to elimibnate it.
For long time I thought that the resonant noise I hear from the steering stem area comes from the spring of the CBS mechanism. Wrong!
It comes from the thin aluminium plate what is installed to protect the mechanism and cable cam from the elements.
It takes only a 10mm wrench to remove it and install some padding beneath. I have used automotive felt/fabric tape to silent it.
As a picture tells 100 words:

Sorry for the large picture. My editing window was down by the time I have realized. how big it was.

Hello Mr Bun,

Could you see any signs of chaffing on the plate where you have placed the felt?

Cheers, Gav.

Please call me Oya, or Oyabun.
No - or rather not significant. The cast CBS MC was slightly shinier though where the plate goes.

Thanks Oya,

The interesting thing is that my bike only started making the noise a couple months after I bought it.
So it went almost 4 years presumably without making any noise and then I add some mods and hey presto.

I just removed the cover plate over the CBS system, so I'll report back later if it was successful.
If the noise is gone, I'll put some rubber lining on it and screw it back on.

No dice, the vibration noise is still there even without the plate.
After having the front of the bike dismantled today, I can imagine there's a dozen things that could be vibrating.
Next time I go for a ride I'll try something simple like opening or pressing down on the fuel flap.
I haven't been able to isolate or stop the vibration by pressing against any body panels, though.
