Just a heads up really....moto-tyres.co.uk are doing the pirelli diablo scoot tyres for £83/pair, inc delivery...good price for good tyres.....

The film is the mould release agent not anything to protect the tyres. Store them in a dark, dry place and they will last a couple of years
But why bother, just buy them when you need them

the city grips just dont do it for me,after having them on previous scoots,had the diablos before and for the small difference that is what ive ordered....for the price as previously said I personally would just buy when needed....4000m out of the rear seems fair to me :-)

If you store the tire in a cool, dry place, it will last a long time. I actually "age" bicycle tubes because the rubber performs much better -- less flats -- if it's sat for a few years in my basement.
You don't want to leave a tire out in the weather for years (that's probably the case djcat is referencing), but properly stored tires should last at least 5 years, then the lifetime of a normal tire, with no real issue.
I've gotten some OLD scooters -- 1987s -- with the stock tires still on, and in great shape because the bike never saw weather and the bike was just parked in a garage for 20 years. I've also seen bikes the same age with horribly dry-rotted tires that are unsafe to even ride the bike around the block on. My point here is, the lifetime of a tire varies with usage and storage. If you have any question about whether or not where you're storing the tire would damage it, just buy them when you need them rather than keeping a stockpile.

I used to get more miles out of a rear on my GS850 back in the early 80s and it weighed more than two PCXs and had the power of about seven.
Three decades of (non) development later, rear scooter tyres should be lasting at least 12,000 miles

Yes, tyre age is a big issue on the old continent as people usually have at least two sets of them for their cars (summer/winter). I have seen cases of retailers forced to take them back because they were too old to be safe (5+ years) and insurance companies reducing pay out because despite the tread depth to be very much legal (sometimes 4+ mm), as the tyres were considered too old to be totally safe. No matter how well you store them, with time the softeners will evaporate and of course the more exposed they are to sun and heat the quicker they will age.
Even good brand PCX tyres are really cheap, too cheap for me to want to worry about them - riding any kind of bike requires full concentration at all times and I just don't want to have that extra thing to care about if I look for grip. If I think they are too old or unsafe in the slightest way, I change them to a really new pair.
