Came off my bike

Post by Stefsam »

Hey there unfortunately last week I had a small accident ..
I was driving into a narrow road car came onto me from opposite .. panicked
Hit the Brake and was on the floor in less than a second !
Probably there was some liquid or gravel .
Nothing happened to me .. I was only maybe 10 kmh
Bike 3 scarches which luckily the sprayer repaired today by re spraying areas without filler
Thank God unnoticeable he s just going to touch up 2 small parts with lacquer
Am happy with the job
My main question is that maybe is that I could have avoided this
I was amazed how quickly it happened
I might have some fault the way is pressed the break
Any advise on this cbs. Or braking ?
Thanks !

Get a scooter with ABS.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

Ye I am interested in forza .. But need to wait a bit ..
Too much cars in our country and condensed
Although I love my pcx I am asking maybe how to use braking more efficiently
Use front rear or both

In the UK, ABS is offered as an option on the SH125 but it seems not on PCX/Vision. Would be good to have it on the PCX.

Always use both together, go easy on the right lever on slippy surfaces.
If you lock the front wheel by pulling the right lever too hard you will almost certainly crash.
Read the road ahead, control your speed with the throttle and aim to use the brakes as little as possible.

Your story sounds exactly like my first (and only) real wreck.
Back when I road "real bikes" I had a DRZ 400 Yamaha Dual Sport.
Fun bike but it was tall and a bit buzzy for me, anyway..

I was on the back roads and coming up to a blind hill/corner combo and I was maybe doing 20mph.
At exactly the worst spot, an old pickup is heading towards me from the oncoming direction.
He wasn't in my lane, but he wasn't all the way on his side either. He just startled me, but If I did nothing, I probably would have been fine.
Unfortunately, I did...

I panicked hit the front brake too hard (or maybe only) and was laying on the road/ edge of ditch with the bike on my right leg before I even knew it.
I had no sensation of falling or even remember anything other than seeing the truck and then me on the ground.
I was embarrassed and ashamed that I could have gone down so easily with no reaction time or even trying to put my foot down.
I was able to get the bike back on 2 wheels and ride myself home, but I still have the road rash my arm, leg, and foot.
The top of my foot got the worst of it as it was under the bike as it slid to a stop.

This was 17 years ago, and it kept me off 2 wheels for 7 years until I started riding scoots 10 years ago.
I make it a point to ALWAYS use both front and rear brakes all the time now.
Too many scoots..... 12 or so I think .

There is nothing that beats practice. Just like learning to ride you have to practice on the brakes.
Spend a day braking hard on different surfaces.Dry pavement, sand on pavement, loose gravel wet pavement We can tell you all day what works for us but it takes precise control on the levers to stop quick and not lose control and every bike and every situation is different and only personal experience will save you. So practice, practice, practice.

I agree. I had a spill on my Burgman a while back. I have 50 years of riding, but each situation is different, so all you can do is practice to the point that it is second nature to you. In my case, because of my experience I had time to try multiple things before the bike actually went down, so the spill ended up being somewhat minor, though it could have been much worse. When you brake, use both hands, even though the brakes are linked on the left. It teaches you to stop smoothly and a lot more balanced. My wife is still learning this and I sometimes see the front of her bike dip when she is stopping suddenly. Try not to dip when you brake. That usually indicates that you are putting too much pressure on the right and not enough on the left.

Many thanks for the value able advises ! Much appreciated .
I use my pcx to commute to work mainly . So I have a givi box were I put laptop while commuting. On the day of the accident I had taken off the carrier box as I wasn't working so the scooter was lighter than I used to ... So need to practice mire with and without box .
