It got a little moist in Bangkok on Tuesday

Post by kramnala58 »

This was the result of about and hour to an hour and a half of torrential rain here in Bangkok on Tuesday.

I am fine. I live on the 18th floor. Our soi (street) hardly ever floods, but many of the adjoining ones do. The grocery store is the one we typically shop at. It is still closed.

The problem was that the rain came down for an hour or so at about 8 cm per hour (about 3.2") and the system can only handle 7cm per hour (about 2.7"). To complicate matters further, a thunderstorm warning had been issued, but the city decided not to lower the water level in the drainage canals ahead of time. The acting Prime Minister (former head of the military who led the present coup) scolded the city, but told the owners of the grocery store that because they are below street level, they pretty much had it coming to them. He said, "If you don't want floods, then move to the mountains." .... This is Thailand. ;)

The flooding, in and of itself, isn't too bad. It's the overflowing sewers that are killer. In 2011, I had to ride a Honda Wave through a foot of sewer water. Thought I was gonna die while praying to every god living, dead, or yet to be born that I would not lay the bike down.

Ah, the fun of riding in Thailand!
