Ah, I was thinking more of on the lines of maps and navigation.

For momentary speed checks, or logging your speed, DailyRoads Voyager can simultaneously record riding video, g-forces, and speed. I use it to record driving, so if I get in an accident, the video can be proof of what happened.

You might be able to search in the Android application marketplace for something. I haven't used anything like what you're looking for, unfortunately.

I've used "android speedometer" and it seems to work fine. There's a free version if you can put up with the ads.

Yeah will search the market but was hoping someone could save me time

Ideally will look for something that logs top speed on a ride. My satnav is not waterproof so a phone application would be good while it uses gps safely in my pocket

MCN ride log is an excellent app for this

My Tracks - it's a Google app, logs top speed, average speed, distance, altitude, gradient etc and plots it all onto a map and you can upload it to Google Maps too.
