Been lurking around for a little while now as I was researching which scooter to get, in the end I went for the Red Honda PCX 125 2015 model and so far I am really glad I did!
I'll get a few pictures up when I find a nice bit of scenery as a background
As a completely new scooter user I could use some advice, mainly involving parking
I'm just never sure where to park, there are signs in the car parks which say "Motorcycles can park for free in a designated motorcycle parking space and in other areas of the car park where it doesn't cause an obstruction" but it doesn't even hint as to whereabouts I can park. I'd prefer not to get fined for parking in the wrong spot
Thanks!
P.S. As you can see I'm in the UK which probably makes a difference
Hey there ex-lurker! Welcome to our forum(s)!
As you can see I'm across the pond, so I have no help to offer (sorry) on yer parking rules, round-abouts or yer weather But we'll have us some fun anyway
Sometimes folks here dislike that we use the whole space meant for a car. Some Folks can even be nasty. Sad right? So, I say if you're going to park for along time anywhere....use your center stand
Happy trails!

In the United States it is not unusual to see motorcycles and scooters parked on the sidewalk, as long as it is out of the way. When we go to the store or to the doctor, we find an area that is not going to be in the way and park them....on the center stand. In parking lots we sometimes park between the parking spot and the sidewalk, if it is not in an area that will cause others problems. We have also parked in the corner of the parking lot, where they usually can not make a full parking space for cars. Do not park on the grass. People don't like that, and the stands have a tendancy to sink unevenly. You are liable to come out to your scooter laying on its side, its little wheels spinning like a little puppy's paws that can't get up. It's a sad sight.

@Valiant Unfortunately there is no one to ask, there is only a "Pay and Display" machine. I would - if I really have to - pay to park in a car parking space but the ticket has to displayed in the front windscreen. In a car this is no problem, it's securely tucked inside the car, but on a bike it's out the open, a gust of wind (or anyone wanting to be annoying) could take it away.
@Mel46 I - did - see some spaces unfit for cars actually (almost triangular spaces), I think I could safely park there, I might try that next time
One of the bonuses I love about having a scooter is the free parking here in the UK which will save quite a bit of money over time, so I'd like to take advantage of it if I possibly can. It's just it would be sooo annoying if I came back to my vehicle and found I'd been fined for parking in the wrong spot.
I have had my PCX for about 4 months now and I had the same question as yourself, especially if I had to travel into the city. I live near Nottingham and all I did was google where to park motorcycles in Nottingham. It brought up a google maps with all parking for bikes and even all the free places as well.
With climate change etc etc, alot of councils are offering free parking to motorcycles / scoots because of the reduced carbon foot print of commuters switching to bikes and even some of the private companies like NCP offer a free bay to motorcycles as well.
Most councils will have this sort of notification on their own carparks -;
"Motorcycle parking policy for this car park
Motorcycles can park for free in a designated motorcycle parking space and in other areas of the car park where it doesn’t cause an obstruction. If you park your motorcycle in a car parking space, you must pay the normal fee for a car.
Motorcycles must not park in disabled or reserved spaces."
@RichyP Thanks for the advice, I was planning a trip into Plymouth and tried what you suggested and it came up with lots of places to park, mostly for free too
So it looks like it's just the smaller places that aren't very clear where you can park, most of the coastal towns / villages in Cornwall included. The message on the car park signs are exactly as you posted and on the council website it even states that there are motorcycle spaces. Some I have found but others I spent nearly 10 minutes riding around and around but ended up having to park in a car parking space

no worries man,
Yeah it can be annoying i know, which is why i googled it once and always do this now. I always do this before a long ride out as well, so I am not riding around for ages before hand. I also think that as a scoot / bike - there is nowhere you can actually display your ticket lol, apart from those ones that want you to ring and pay by card, capitalist b******s lol.
if you ever plan on going to the coast or a distance that is quite far away, its good to look at Google Maps on your phone (if android anyway) as you can set routes to avoid Motorways, which obviously we aren't allowed on, then just plug one earphone in and you have satnav courtesty of google and you arent going to get in trouble by going on the wrong road

I hope this helps
Richy, 6 months ago you could even park on the street, in a car bay for free. Guess it's still the same, but with the NCT you can never be sure.
Other rides
Yamaha MT-01, Yamaha BT1100, Yamaha WR250R, Ducati 900 GTS, Honda VFR 750FV, Honda Forza 350
Just as a quick update, I e-mailed Cornwall Council to see what they would suggest and they basically said the same thing, if it's not causing an obstruction and it is not in a valid car parking space, then it is free to park there.
I'll keep a copy of that e-mail just in case they do decide to fine me one day
