New battery recommendations (UK)

Post by Simon0867 »

Just back home from a couple of weeks away. Jumped on my PCX for the short commute to work this morning and it wouldn't start.

The dash was coming on but flickering, the electric start wouldn't work. To be honest I've noticed a slight flicker in the dash over the last month and had been meaning to stick the battery on charge. My commute is only a couple of miles each way and with it being winter I've not been out for longer runs much.

Took the battery out tonight and have hooked it up to my Oxford Oximate charger. It's been charging for 4 hours now and the green (full charge) light is still not on. I'll leave it running overnight but in case I have to bite the bullet and buy a new one can any fellow UK riders recommend a good inexpensive replacement. My PCX is a 2014 model.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated - thanks.

I think you really need to leave it at least overnight on charge. The charger you have is a low current model so it will take a while.

There are reports of battery failures on pcx' but it's worth giving a bit of time on charge before buying a new one.

It's a trickle charger and you left it for two weeks. Half any lead accumulators life. Leave it more than 4hrs and ride it to charge it. Overnight is good
After that eBay, a dealer or Amazon is your friend.

The green light on the Oximate was glowing faintly this morning. Just leaving the battery on the charger all day today, hopefully it will be good to put back in the bike tonight.

Came home this afternoon and no change in the Oximate indicator, the green "fully charged" light is barely glowing. I'm guessing the battery is not in ideal condition.

Spoke to my dealer and they are quoting £50 for a new battery.

Alternatively there is an eBay cheapo for £23:

I'm tempted to just Go for the dealer option, at least I know I'm getting Honda quality.

First of all, if you can get it running go and take it for a good long fast ride of around 50 miles.
The best charger is the alternator ;)

Looks like the original Honda battery in a UK facelift model like the one in your picture is a Yuasa YTZ8V.

If the dealer is going to supply a Yuasa YTZ8V for £50, say yes and rejoice.
Just out of curiosity do you have any aftermarket electrical accessories?
Is the scooter still under warranty?

The bike is still (just) under warranty.
The only electrical accessory I have attached is a simple fob activated alarm but to be honest I hardly ever use it.

I think I'm going to just take the dealer route, someone else also pointed out that the price is good for that quality of battery.

If its still under warranty you should not be paying for a new battery, but the aftermarket alarm will not make it easy getting one.

They will likely contend that the battery was killed by the alarm and they could be right.
