2013 PCX - Will not start, clicking sound

Post by riderofpcx »

Hi all,

I'm having trouble with my 2013 PCX - it will not start and just makes two clicking sounds every time I press that start button. This sounds is coming from a little plastic box that is on the wire harness right by the fuse box. I thought it might have been the battery, but it was charged it and it keeps over 12V. I am also trying with a new spark plug.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what component I could look at to resolve this issue.

Thanks

Just because the battery registers 12v on a test doesn't guarantee its OK.

The spark plug is not related to the problem; you can leave it alone. It's most likely the battery, which can read fully charged but not be able to deliver the goods to the starter. You can take it out and have it load-tested at a battery shop just to be sure, but it's probably the culprit.

You need to "load test" the battery at an auto parts store. The battery can register above 12 V, but not have the amperage to turn over the starter.

Well, I can't add much to that. The clicking is probably the starter making contact but not having enough juice to turn it over. I don't know where you are located (please add your location so that we can give you better help), but if you are in the United States and you have a friend with a scooter or a motorcycle you can jump start your scooter. If it jump starts without any problem, then it is definitely your battery. I noticed that you have a 2013 model. One of our 2013 PCX 150s has had to have the battery replaced already. They don't last forever, so it is probably time. Measure it and get the amphour rating. Then you may be able to go to Walmart and buy a replacement, though it won't be top of the line. Still, it would get you going if you need a quick solution. If you went to the Honda store it would be around $100, but online you can find one for less than $45. It all depends on how long you want to be without your bike.
Type this into Google and you will be given quite a choice: honda pcx 150 battery

If it's a click, that is the starter relay. A slightly louder clacking sound would be the solenoid. If the engine turns over with the starter motor, you will hear a clunk, several hopefully, followed by a vroom, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

You should take the battery out of the scoot and put it on a digital load tester. This will check the state of charge and health of the battery. The battery could be charged and may have voltage but be incapable of putting out current. If the battery checks out come back and let us know and we'll go to the next step.

Thank you all for the replies, I will get the battery tested. It is probably worth pointing out that other electrical components appear to function properly - lights, the dash instrument panel, the fuel pump, etc., but I think I remember seeing this at least a couple times in car where the battery was strong enough to power some equipment, but would fail at actually starting the engine, so it would make sense.

Thanks again, I will report back once I know that status of the battery.

Correct. The lights and dash working but the engine not starting is normal for a bad battery. Those things fool you into thinking the batt is OK when it's not.

The guys at Advance Auto Parts tested the battery twice and it came up as needing a replacement. I just ordered a new battery and will see how it goes. Thanks for all the feedback.
