I've already bought something else which was why I was a happy to take my time and see if I could fix this one as it had been such a good runner until this happened. Unfortunately it seems as though fixing the problem is going to be more costly than it's worth, even if I'm doing the work by myself and I'm a little reluctant to buy a used engine. If it was me I would favour option 1
Whatever you do FFS don't arse about fitting "performance" parts on an already scrap engine.
