Broke Down in Montana

Post by FromMototoScooter »

On a return trip cross country at 11,568 miles my PCX broke down on the side of a highway in Montana. Engine was still running, but lost all momentum and throttle response. I could only compare it to being on a regular bike in neutral. When the engine is on it sounds like it's revving high and knocking noises are apparent. What do you think it is? Oil full. I believe it's under warranty.

When you say "Lost all throttle response" Does the engine accelerate when you twist it, or not? If it does, could be a broken belt. It it doesn't, maybe broken throttle cable. Just a stab at it.

Sorry, yeah that was vague. Yes, it will rev, but no response ( no acceleration) it just sits there like it's in neutral. Thanks for the reply

I hope it's just the belt. That would be great news.

I think that is about the time/miles for belt change anyway, though that is the first time I have heard of one actually breaking at that mileage. Usually you get warning like less topend and slower acceleration. Still, it does sound like a broken belt.

I had to have an unforced belt change once I hit 45

It was the belt! Excellent news, at least it wasn't something more catastrophic

The guys at Five Valley Honda were nice enough to cannibalize a new belt off a PCX they had on their showroom floor to get me back on the road. Nice black one, poor thing.

That's excellent service - not many dealers/garages would do that.

That is a dealer worth dealing with, but hopefully you won't have, and not that you will be able to with not living in the area.

Cudos to the dealer.

I have to say that I have only known of one dealer who has gone out of his way like that. You need to go to his website and write a good review for them. By the way, though you cant use it now, I saved my wife's old belt for emergencies and have it in my tailbox. Just a thought for future situations.

Yes, I should definitely write them a good review. Good idea. They even replaced it under warranty - cost to me was zero. I was surprised they didn't charge me, said the belt should have lasted till the service interval. Couldn't be happier.
